Getting there & away
All buses stop by the taxis ecologicas on the main road to/from Esmeraldas; there is no bus terminal. Buses for Esmeraldas ($0.80, one hour) normally begin from Súa, and there are plenty of seats. Most buses from Esmeraldas to Atacames continue on to Súa (10 minutes), Same and Tonchigüe for about $0.50. There are regular buses to Muisne ($1.50, 1½ hours).
Daily service to Quito (seven hours) can be found with Transportes Occidentales (09-981 9743; Barrio El Prado) for $7, Trans Esmeraldas(273 1550; Calle Luis Vargas Torres & Juan Montalvo) for $8 and Aerotaxi (273 1112; Calle Cuarta) for $9. If you’re returning to Quito on a Sunday in the high season be sure to buy your ticket in advance.
