Earthquake in Ecuador

There was a large earthquake (7.8) tonight near Cojimies (between Mompiche and Pedernales). It was shallow and it was felt right through the country. It was 6.4 in Quito, but no major damage was reported other than some power outages. Guyaquil was hit hard, there's a lot of damage reported, at least one overpass collapsed and so far one death officially. Manta has suffered too, the airport is closed, the control tower collapsed, 10 deaths reported in the city. Portoviejo too, with 18 deaths…

Penguins

Has anyone seen any penguins on the coast of Uruguay in winter? I will be going there next month (July) and am hoping to see some. I have read that they can be seen in Cabo Polonio, but are they elsewhere as well?

HI, We travel next week and would like to experience fusion cuisine. Please recommend a place close to the JW Mariott. Also, we plan to see Huaca Pucilana and Church of San Francisco the first day. Sleep in, lunch at the fusion restaurant then Huaca Pucilana and then Church. Is Uber our best mode of transportation?

Hi folks,
I recently took the boat from Necocli trying to avoid going through Turbo. Excellent experience altogether. The ride does take 1h30, pretty smooth after the storm passed us (they had us disembark as the storm was hitting us right before we left, we were very happy either wise decision). The boat was in very good condition, we were not packed either.
Tickets can be bought at the wharf an hour before departure or reservation can be made in adavance at the Panorama Hotel. Ticket costs…

Hi all,

I am taking boats up the Amazon from Macapa, Brazil to Coca, Ecuador during July. I obviously want to do some expeditions into the interior, but am running into the fact that most of the tour companies only provide details for the typical 3/4 day trips (which almost always includes river dolphins, meeting of the waters, piranha finishing, sunset/sunrise, caiman watching, and like one or two three hour nature hikes).

These are all generally well reviewed, but I'm very conscious of a…

7 Days in Ecuador

Hi All,
I live in Panama and have 7 days off. I'm thinking of visiting Ecuador but I'm not sure if 7 days is enough. Galapagos is not in my plans for the moment as I don't wan tot go overboard with the budget.
I can fly-in at Quito or Guayaquil. I've read other threads and it seems I should not spent too much time in Quito. My main interest are cultural, old towns, food and maybe catch a nice photo or ten.
Maybe I can do Quito, Otavalo, Cuenca (sleep here), Baños (sleep here). What do you think…
