There was a large earthquake (7.8) tonight near Cojimies (between Mompiche and Pedernales). It was shallow and it was felt right through the country. It was 6.4 in Quito, but no major damage was reported other than some power outages. Guyaquil was hit hard, there's a lot of damage reported, at least one overpass collapsed and so far one death officially. Manta has suffered too, the airport is closed, the control tower collapsed, 10 deaths reported in the city. Portoviejo too, with 18 deaths…

I'm an 18 year old American taking a gap year before heading off to college. My first stop on my trip will be down to Brazil to go and see the summer Olympics. I don't have a solid plan quite yet but am starting to piece things together day by day. If this seems interesting to anyone hmu and lets see where it goes.
we are just finalising our itinerary for our South America trip. We know it can be difficult to stick to a schedule in these countries but this is just a rough guide we have given ourselves. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this route and have any suggestions for us.

We are a couple who want to join a 3d 2n Salar de Uyuni tour in July from the town of Uyuni. We have heard that the cars get crammed with up to 6 people from Uyuni, we were wondering if anyone can recommend a company where we can pay a bit more and only share with 2 other tourists? There is a lot of information of how to do this from Tupiza but I can't find a company that advertises this from Uyuni! We also don't want to pay the high price for a private tour with just the two of us.
I'm in buenos Aires for a week and wanted to know where the best bars and clubs are. I'm staying near Palermo. If anyone knows somewhere that's good at the weekend let me know. Thanks!
In a few weeks, we are traveling to Maquipucuna Reserve which is NW of Quito in Pichincha province. Since the earthquake, I have sent them a couple emails but have received no response. Does anyone know if there has been earthquake issues affecting this area? Hopefully, it's only an issue of not checking their email and not something more significant. Thanks.
There has been some very old posts (2007?) as to the desirability of staying in Old Town versus New Town in Quito.
I shall be in Quito for 1 month. I suspect either locale would be fine with me but any input/observations from any of you out there as to a preference? I have never been to Quito.
In advance, many thanks!!
