For the benefit of everyone dropping by the Brazil branch for the first time, please read this FAQ first. And I hope there can be some sort of way to moderate the thread to keep it updated and clean. I know there are some AWESOME regular contributors here who enjoy giving advice; I feel this thread can really help to condense the information available.
I'll go first, with some general thoughts from the South America FAQ. Many thank to Apollo for starting that thread and for a great idea…
I am an American passport holder who is planning on traveling to Bolivia soon. I am well aware that I need a visa in order to visit the country. I am wondering if I should arrange it beforehand or just get it at the airport.
I am flying from Cusco to La Paz by Peruvian airlines. I have read many Americans stating that getting the visa at the airport was relatively easy. However, I have seen a blog that have stated that Americans have been turned back at the border or by the airline for not…
A friend and I have a start-up and are planning to re-locate for a year to somewhere in Latin America (including, possibly, Belize).
We spent some time in Sayulita (in 2009) and Montanita (in 2012) as travelers and really loved our time there. We appreciated their liveliness, energy, and Bohemian vibes that are uncommon in small towns.
I wanted to ask if anyone who has been to these towns knows of others that are similar.
Ideally we're looking for a place that's accessible from a…
So I will take flight LA836 from Tahiti to Santiago with 2 hours stopover at Easter island, I travel with Australian passport and I've heard that Aussie enter Chile via Santiago airport needs to pay 117 USD reciprocity fee, just wondering if I am allowed to clear immigration at Easter island airport and re-enter the airport for next flight? Is there any reciprocity fees for Aussie enter Chile via Easter island?
Is LA836 from Easter island to Santiago leg a domestic flight or still international…
Hey friends! Looking for advice re: booking a hike up to Machu Picchu in mid-January. I typically travel and book things as I go, but I recently heard that Machu Picchu can book up months in advance. Is this the case mid-Jan, or is this more of a concern during the busier seasons?
Basically: do I need to worry about booking it now, or can I arrive with 3-4 days of buffer and still do the hike?
I will have limited time in Ecuador at the end of Dec. My question is where to go if I have only time for one of these two places, Otavalo or Cotopaxi national park? Which place has better sceneries? I know Otavalo also has a few lakes and nice for hiking, but where I should go if I only have 2 days?
Ola again :)
I know I set awfully lot of questions, but this one is a must, since on my trips around the world I have experienced very different policies about money.
Do you think I should bring cash (EUR) and exchange in exchange office upon arrival to BA or is it best to just withdraw pesos from ATM (regarding exchange rate)? Are ATMs available in more remote places like Patagonia? How about paying with paycard - is it accepted out of big cities or is it better to carry cash for stuff like…
How far in advance is it advisable to book domestic flights and long haul buses in Argentina? I would like to book as late as possible, so we can change plans due to weather or appeal of certain places and leave some space for spontaneity, but would also like to avoid high prices and possibility of not getting a flight/bus.
What is general practice if the buses are sold out (let's say a week before journey) - do bus companies tend to provide additional buses and keep selling tickets or…
