For the benefit of everyone dropping by the Brazil branch for the first time, please read this FAQ first. And I hope there can be some sort of way to moderate the thread to keep it updated and clean. I know there are some AWESOME regular contributors here who enjoy giving advice; I feel this thread can really help to condense the information available.

I'll go first, with some general thoughts from the South America FAQ. Many thank to Apollo for starting that thread and for a great idea…

I'll be going from Colombia to Brazil during Sep-Jan and I'll be in Cusco mid-October. Does anybody want to group up and do the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu? Possibly the 21st October.

Thanks, Henry.

Hi, I'm a 27 years old Jordanian civil engineer working in UAE, planning to travel to Asuncion to live there for a while, however I don't know much about this country in all aspects, such as, Are there good opportunities to work there as a civil engineer or anything else? What is the cost of living there? Where exactly is the best place to live, as in nice & cheep? Being lousy Spanish speaker, is it gonna be a real issue or people there can speak English? What is all this talk about criminal…

Howdy, I am changing jobs and luckily have a month between the jobs to fit some travelling in! My wife and I are thinking of going to South America. I completely appreciate that we will not even scratch the surface of the continent, so my question is, what would you do if you have a month in South America? Thanks. Liam

I'm looking to do the above next year and wanted to know your experience has less experienced hiker? The plan is to be there for 5 days, do yo take all your stuff or only what you need for the 5 days? Any feedback about this would be helpful.

Thanks
Penelope

Hello! I'm hoping to get some advice on our Patagonia trip next year - my main concerns are transport availability in late March/early April and whether we have enough time/money for what we'd like to do.

We're flying from BA into El Calafate on 27th March, traveling overland to Santiago, where we fly out from on 16th April.

After seeing the glacier we'd like to head up to Bariloche via El Chalten. I'm wondering where people would advise us to cross over into Chile to get up to Santiago, and…

Hi all!

I have a quick Q for anyone Colombian/who knows a bit more about the visa system. I'm due to arrive in Colombia on 30 September. I'm doing some volunteer work with an organisation for 6 weeks, but am still technically a full-time student through my university because the volunteer work goes towards my degree. Does anyone know if it's necessary for me to purchase the $395 volunteer visa or if I can possibly get away with the $100ish student visa option. (Obviously I'd much prefer that…

Hi there, travellers!
I'm Sasha, a 32 years old architect, who found a wonderful Cruise around Patagonia and Antarctica. It lasts 21 days starting from Santiago in Chile, sailing through Patagonia with stops in Puerto Montt and Punta Arenas to see thousands of penguins, then going all the way to Antarctica to meet incredible icebergs and through Falkland islands (Malvinas) moving up to Buenos Aires in Argentina. Antarctica is my dream, so when I found a cruise that costs around 3000$ for three…
