Getting there & away
Buses from Ambato’s bus terminal leave about every half-hour for Baños. The fare is under $1 and the ride is about an hour. To and from Quito and many other towns, it’s sometimes quicker to catch a bus to Ambato and change rather than wait for the less frequent direct buses.
The Baños bus terminal (Amazonas) is within easy walking distance of most hotels. Buses for Quito ($3.50, 3½ hours) leave almost every hour. The road to Riobamba ($1, one hour) via Penipe ($0.50, 30 minutes) recently reopened, so buses no longer need to drive via Ambato. To the Oriente, buses depart regularly for Puyo ($2, two hours), Tena ($4, five hours) and Coca ($10, 10 hours).
There are also daily buses to Guayaquil ($7, seven hours) and Otavalo ($5, five hours).
