  2. La Quinta de Juan León Mera

La Quinta de Juan León Mera is set on the banks of the Río Ambato in the suburb of Atocha, about 2km northeast of downtown. The estate, built in 1874, has period furnishing and is set in the Jardín Botánico La Liria, a lush garden with more than 200 plant species and a trail down to the river. To get there by foot, walk northwest on Montalvo, cross the river and turn right on Capulíes.

  3. Museo de Ciencias Naturales

Although a bit dusty, this natural history museum in the Colegio Bolívar houses Ecuador’s most thorough collection of stuffed birds, mammals and reptiles. The historical photograph collage and a gruesome display of farm freaks, such as two-headed calves and six-legged lambs, make great fun for the whole family.

  4. El Alamo Chalet

Easily identified by its chalet-style wooden facade, El Alamo serves good, diner-style food: meat and chicken dishes, llapingachos (fried potato and cheese pancakes), a hearty desayuno montubiano (a Manabi-province breakfast of fish, eggs, beans and fried plantains) and more basic morning dishes.

  5. Mercado Central

The second floor of Ambato’s indoor market has particularly good llapingachos (fried potato and cheese pancakes). Old ladies serve them with eggs, avocado slices and sausage (veggies can get it without the meat) for $1.50. The younger gals nearby blend superfresh juices made with bottled water ($1).

With a wood-fired brick oven, thin crusts and fresh ingredients, this is easily the best pizza in town. Locals enjoy the cuts of meat here as well.
