I'm currently in Berastagi. I'm hoping to spend a couple of days or so exploring interesting Batak villages and maybe doing a bit of hiking, preferably around the northern end of Danau Toba. I'm looking for advice on a good base in the area, and nice villages or regions to explore. Advice on how to get there from Berastagi would also be great. I've been to Tuk-Tuk before and didn't like it; I'm hoping for somewhere notably less touristy.
Just wondering about whether the country literally shuts down over Easter or whether its a good time to go to east timor because of from what I've read, pretty wonderful Easter celebrations? And if so, any suggestions on where best to spend time, given the time of year and a desire to be around easter festivities. It seems info is pretty scarce online. I will only be in East Timor for a week unfortunantly.
Also, given the backpackers has closed down. Has anybody stayed at this place https://www…
I just emailed TL immigration with all the info they list on their website for the visa authorization letter to enter over land. Has anybody done this recently? Will it actually be issued? How long should it take?
Has anyone used the latest lonely planet East Timor guide and how useful did you find it? I notice it hasn't been updated since 2011 but from what I've been hearing much has changed in the last few years.
Can anyone tell me if the Vila Harmonia is still running in Becora? I was there in 2005 and Pedro Lebre was very welcoming and helpful. Also Tua Koin on Atauro Island (http://www.atauroisland.com), it was run by the local community as an eco village.
I'm hoping to return in February but it seems all the places I knew are no longer running.
Hello, I will be travelling to East Timor in a few week & wanted to know where I'm able to get access to Internet in Dili. Am I able to get a USB dongle & use it around as I go? If so how are the prices? Or are there any other places that have decent speeds. Thanks!
Hello my brothers, how are you doing?
I'm going to fly to East Timor in the next 2 days and according to what I read on the internet, travelers from a number of countries that are entitled to obtain Visa on arrival in Dili airport must show up, at first, $100 and then $50/day for the number of days you intend to stay in the country. But recently I read an article written by a Vietnamese traveler in 2013, saying that he and all other foreigners were forced to show up $500/person. So I'm very…
East Timor is one of my options for next year's trip. It's somewhere I've long wanted to visit, but I'm beginning to question whether it's really for me, on this occasion.
I enjoy fairly 'untouristed' destinations, I don't mind travelling in fairly rough conditions, and my interests include wildlife, photography, nice scenery, beaches (for a day or so), architecture and moderate hiking.
However, I don't want to hire a car or scooter and neither am I a diver or snorkeller. I'd also…
Hi all. Can anyone tell me conclusively (the LP says one thing, the FCO site - which I tend to prefer - another) whether a Brit can get a visa on arrival at the airport for US$30?
