Hoping to go to Playa Rincon and other beaches near Las Galeras in Samana in a few weeks, though I know on the east coast of the country there is a lot of seaweed at the shoreline/front of the water this time of year (unfortunately I get a bad rash from it so I'm trying to avoid it if possible). Can anyone let me know if that is also the case at these beaches, as well? Thanks!

Driving in the mountains

Hi all,

We are off to the DR in September and have booked a rental car. It's a normal car, not a 4x4 or SUV. I also have a map of the country which shows navigable roads across much of the mountainous regions of the DR. Am I right to think that not all of these roads are suitable for me to drive a normal car along? I read somewhere here about a "new road" up to Constanza.

We'd ideally like to drive from Barahona to Constanza, to Jarabacoa, to Santiago. If we can't go cross-country then we'd…

I heard the Haitians are getting the "bums rush" from DR. Any news on this from on the ground there?

hello travellers!
i'm going to hispaniola (dates above), travelling solo but would like to meet up with other like-minded travellers.

i'll probably spend about 10 days in DR, beach/mountain trek/rafting,

then go to haiti for a couple of weeks, PaP/S coast/caves/waterfall/north coast, then back to DR for a few days before heading to cuba.

drop me a line if you're going to be in the area and fancy meeting up for some of the above, or other things.

Sources have posted before that there is a mini-van service from the Santo Domingo airport to Zona Colonial that is an alternative to taxis. This is sort of true. Although the nice, I-want-to-be-helpful people at the Information desks at the airport don't seem to know it, private mini-vans ARE available on the far left side, upper level Arrivals. They are unmarked, hold 7-8 people and leave when full. The cost is DR70 pesos. Taxis will ask for DR 1000 pesos (but can be negotiated down)…

Taxi fares in Santo Domingo

In theory, taxis charge based on what zone they are within the city and surrounding areas. The reality is that every fare is negotiable and the more American/Western European you look, the higher the starting point. I just returned last week and every taxi, over 3 days, regardless of starting point or destination was negotiable. You can also generally fix a price in US$. Do not expect the driver to have any change other than in DR pesos, however.

I've travelled here before but I want to be a bit more adventurous - coming from Canada - its still cost effective to get an all inclusive which I plan to use as a home base but trying to figure if I should use Juan Dolio- near Santo Domingo - or Puerto Plata as my place to stay and take day and overnight trips from - or other suggestions -

Hello everybody.
I have only just returned from Guadeloupe (and loved it) and already booked my next trip to the Caribbean. In January, I am going to Dominican republic for almost three weeks and I would also like to take a quick look at Haiti for a few days during that time. I land in Santo Domingo andfrom what I know, there is a bus that would take me to Haiti from there? I would do that in the first week of my trip, and when I return to DR, I am planning to focus on the coastal part. Is it…
