If you’ve come to expect restrained Scandi style in your top-end Danish hotels, prepare to be surprised by the Royal, Århus’ premiere place to bed down.
Play lord of the manor at this grand, castlelike estate 7km east of the city, amid forest on Kolding Fjord (2km past Trapholt; take bus 4).
Far and away the most interesting chain hotel in Århus, the Marselis sits on Århus Bay, with a small bathing beach out front and a large forest out back.
Good old-fashioned service and (somewhat pricey) old-school rooms.
The first camping ground you’ll see, on your right as you enter town, has plenty of good sites backing onto a beach. It’s well geared up for family fun, with playgrounds and mini-golf to entertain.
Lego figures greet you at the door and a copy of a Lego Mona Lisa hangs in the reception area. There’s amazing kid-friendly detail here, and plenty of space for grown-ups as well as playrooms.
The town’s largest and most business-oriented hotel has good service and agreeable on-site eateries in a central location, but we don’t think the simple rooms justify the price.
Attached to the Scandinavian Congress Centre and looking every inch the business hotel, the Radisson goes about its job with a minimum of fuss and a service-oriented smile.
This smart hotel (a 10-minute walk west of town) caters to both business folk and holidaymakers. The crisp décor and efficient service are impressive; rates vary according to room standard and demand, with good-value rates on Friday and Saturday.

Rold StorKro, off Rte 180 to Hobro, has more character and a prettier setting, and is a hugely popular spot for parties and wedding receptions.
The best value in town is found here in this classy century-old building that’s been thoroughly renovated and sits in a prime inner-city location.
Propellen has a grown-up feel, but still caters to families with its indoor pool, playroom and playground. Adults will enjoy the sauna, Jacuzzis and restaurant.

This hotel feels like a country retreat, thanks to its forest location and spacious grounds (and the fjord is just a few hundred metres away). The rooms are quite luxurious, classically furnished and equipped with all the necessities.
Five years young and still shiny, this polished performer lives in the redeveloped paper factory that was once the backbone of the local economy.
Stumbling distance to the action of Jomfru Ane Gade, so a good choice for cashed-up party-hard travellers.
The city’s most central budget option has small, no-frills rooms down by the harbour. You’ll probably be more drawn to the communal areas, such as the garden or 1st-floor TV room, reading nook and sunny yellow breakfast room.
