Night Watchman Tour
One of the best free activities in Denmark is Ribe's 45-minute night watchman tour, which departs from out the front of Weis Stue, on Torvet, once or twice a night in the warmer months.
Nowadays, it's a stroll through the town's historic streets, designed to entertain and educate visitors to Ribe, but the night watchman's walk was originally born of necessity. As early as the 14th century these watchmen made their nightly rounds in Ribe, making sure the streets were safe for locals to walk. They were also charged with being on the lookout for fires or floods threatening the town. The job was abolished in Ribe in 1902, but reinstated in 1935 as a tourist attraction. These …

Hjejlen
The Hjejlen, the world’s oldest operating paddle steamer, has been faithfully plying the waters of the Lake District since it was first launched in 1861. These days the boat shuttles tourists from Silkeborg to the foot of Himmelbjerget during the summer season (10am and 2pm daily, July to mid-August). The operators have other boats regularly plying the same route during this period, and from May to September. The route (adult one way/return 75/105kr, 1¼ hours) takes in a wealth of river and lake scenery and is one of the most popular outings in the Lake District.

Djurs Sommerland
If you’re travelling with hyperactive kids, let them drag you to one of Djursland’s biggest drawcards, Djurs Sommerland. It’s a much-hyped amusement park with arguably the best outdoor rides in Jutland (more than 60) and a waterpark, with pools and waterslides for all ages. Your wallet may feel the sting, however, when you realise that everyone over the age of three pays the same entrance fee; once this is paid, though, you’re free to play to your heart’s content. Closing hours vary (from 5pm to 9pm in July and August).

Scandlines
In July and August Scandlines offers a 1¾-hour sightseeing cruise around the harbour and into Ho bay, with a chance of seeing seals in their natural habitat. Tours operate from Monday to Thursday and depart from the ferry harbour in Esbjerg two or three times a day, and from Nordby on Fanø once daily. Enquire at the tourist office for the schedule.

Margrethe I
Jump on board a one-hour cruise on the Margrethe I in summer and soak up the sun – and Viborg – from out on the lake. There are additional tours from late June; the boat departs from outside Golf Salonen on Randersvej. From mid-May to late September, you can also rent canoes and rowboats here for lake exploration (45/70r for 30/60 minutes).

Family Tour
As the name suggests, the five-day Family Tour is ideal for kids. It takes you along a route from Tørring north to Silkeborg, staying in camping grounds where your tent is pre-erected for you. Tents and cooking gear are all sorted – you just need to bring a sleeping bag and mattress, and food. The Family Tour is only available from mid-June.

Rømø Islændercenter
Rømø Islændercenter, based at Hotel Kommandørgården, has a stable full of Icelandic horses and a range of rides to appeal to kids, beginners and more-experienced horse-folk, through forest and along the beach. A two- to three-hour sunset tour costs 275kr, while a full-day tour to the north of Rømø costs 695kr.

Nord-Line
Nord-Line offers a longer (2½ hours) cruise with a nature focus (as opposed to Scandlines’ sightseeing aim). There is a nature guide on board, and you stand a better chance of seeing seals. Tours operate on weekdays from Esbjerg (from Museum Pier 1) and Fanø’s Nordby from late May to late October.

Ghost Walks
The summertime ghost walks operated by Museet Ribes Vikinger show the town in a whole new light – listen out for tales of the last woman to be burnt to death in Ribe, accused of witchcraft by a paranoid community. Walks are staged once a week, in Danish, German and English.

Ry Kanofart

Sandormen
The tractor-pulled bus, the Sandormen, can take you out to the most northerly point if it's raining or if time is not on your side; it leaves from the car park at Grenen from 09:00 daily, and runs regularly all day, according to demand.

Svømmestadion Danmark
On rainy days it’s worth knowing that Denmark’s largest indoor swimming complex is in Esbjerg. Svømmestadion Danmark is home to a wave pool, waterslides, kiddie pools, sauna and spa.

Rømø Ranch
Another reputable outfit, Rømø Ranch, has a stable of well-groomed horses backing on to Lakolk Beach. An hour on a pony/horse costs 89/95kr; there’s a weekly programme of tours.

If you don’t have your own transport, the best option is to rent a bicycle from Garni, as Rømø is as flat as a pancake and perfect for cycling.
