Odense Getting there & around

Getting around

Bus & tram

Bus

In Odense, board city buses at the front and pay the driver (17kr) when you get off – exact change is recommended. The main transit point for city buses is in front of Sankt Knuds Kirke. All city buses except 71 also pass through the bus station behind the Odense Banegård Center.

Car & motorcycle

Outside rush hour, driving in Odense is not difficult, but many central sights are on pedestrian streets. It’s best to park your car and explore on foot.

Near the city centre, there’s metered parking along the streets (come with lots of change). Spaces fill quickly, but there are substantial car parks around Brandts Klædefabrik, the Carl Nielsen Museet and by the train station. Parking costs around 13kr for one hour.

Taxis are readily available at the train station, or you can order one by phoning Odense Taxa (66 15 44 15).

Bicycle

In central Odense, bicycles can be rented at City Cykler (66 13 97 83; www.citycykler.dk; Vesterbro 27; 10am-5.30pm Mon-Fri, to 1pm Sat), west of the city centre, for 99kr per day. Per’s Cykler & Knallerter (66 14 84 85; Vesterbro 95) is further down the same road and better if you’re on a budget – bikes are 50kr per day.

Alternatively, get a person with calves of steel to pedal you about. Cycle-taxi tours (28 12 75 13; bestilling@pers-cykeltaxa.dk; May-Oct), of Odense centre, cost a base rate of 40kr, plus 3kr per minute after that.

Odense is an innovative city as far as bikes go. There are lockable bike sheds, several paths have speed cameras and a cycle counter just east of the tourist bureau tallies passing bicycles – around 8000 per day.
