Lonely Planet review

Odense Zoo - Denmark's second largest - borders the river, 2km south of the city centre. The animals generally have large enclosures and the zoo supports conservation and educational programmes. It's home to tigers, lions, giraffes, zebras, chimpanzees and African birds, and there's an 'oceanium' with penguins and - the zoo's biggest attraction - manatees. Children can also enjoy petting donkeys, a playground and lots of animal related games.

Admittance to the zoo stops one hour before closing time; at certain periods, the zoo opens late on Thursday, Friday and Saturday - check the website for details.

Odense Åfart boats stop at the zoo during the peak season. City buses 11, 12, 31, 81, 82 and S3 (around kr17 , 10 minutes) run there frequently, or you could walk the 2km-long wooded riverside path that begins at Munke Mose park.
