Lonely Planet review

Grungy but comfortable, this hostel lets you sleep cheap and be kind to the earth, all in one go. It's located on a shopping street on the fringe of downtown, making it a good option for backpackers - especially organic-leaning ones.

Park your weary self in an eight-, 20- or 30-bed dorm room. The purple walls aren't exactly calming, but they do liven the place up. The green common lounge is worn and homey with couches, a TV, candles and long tables to spread out the Monopoly on. Reception doubles as a cafe, serving freshly ground coffee and snacks as well as an organic breakfast. There is no guest kitchen although you're welcome to borrow plates and cutlery. Pillows, blankets and towels are available to rent. Bring your own lock to store your stuff and do your best to ignore the crusty, graffitied staircase. When you've had enough communal air, wander into the city along the nearby lakeside paths.
