Due to a serious flare up of the rebel activity that has been happening off and on for decades, tracking in DRC ceased in mid-2008. When it’s again both possible and safe (not always the same thing) to visit, this is the easiest place to pick up permits on short notice since tour operators, and most tourists, stay far away. There are two places here to track mountain gorillas: Bukima (with four habituated families), 40km north of Goma, and Djomba (with one family), 8km from the Ugandan border by Kisoro. Both are in stunning locations and lie at the end of very rough roads.
