    Antique buyers beware

    ozyjayce does not recommend this,

We would like to alert fellow visitors intending to buy antiques in the Czech Republic to take our experience into account.

During our stay in Prague in July this year we purchased an antique piece from Antique Vladimir Andrle. The piece was described to us as an original art nouveau WMF centrepiece

We were promised, as we understand is the case for every purchase of antiques from the Czech Republic, a certificate from the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague (MDAP), which would confirm its authenticity.

The piece was duly despatched to Australia and we paid for duty custom clearance and administration costs.

Unfortunately the certificate from MDAP which was enclosed with the piece stated the maker of the piece as “unknown” rather than WMF.

Upon querying this with Antique Andrle via email we were told we would be provided with a new certificate from MDAP. A further email was received from Antique Andrle with a document attached. This purported to be from MDAP, had their stamp and a signature but did not look at all like the first certificate received and was marked: “Additional certificate to free export permition”, and inaccurately described the piece as ‘jardiniere”.

We asked for a refund from Antique Andrle as they shipped the piece without the promised documentation and while they have agreed to pay the original amount they have refused to pay for shipping the piece back or our customs and duty costs which will leave us significantly out of pocket. They have also been very rude in their treatment of us.

Our recommendation to travellers looking to purchase antiques from this dealer is to take great care and ensure that you view the certificate from MDAP and have a chance to translate it before you ship any goods.
