    St Bartholomew Church

Gigantic Gothic St Bartholomew Church looms over the surrounding facades from the centre of náměstí Republiky. Ask at the City Information Centre about guided tours. Look inside at the delicate marble 'Pilsen Madonna' (dating from c 1390) on the main altar, or climb the 301 steps to the top of the tower (weather permitting) for serious views.

Church of the Sacrifice of the Virgin

Along Hroznová, on Piaristické náměstí, is the Church of the Sacrifice of the Virgin and a former Dominican monastery with a splendid pulpit. Enter the church from the Gothic cloister. Next door is a medieval armoury.

    Church of Mary Magdalene

Whatever your thoughts on the excesses of baroque architecture, it's hard not to fall for this confection by Kilian Ignatz Dientzenhofer, dating from the 1730s. You can arrange a tour through a branch of the Infocentrum to see the baroque crypt and the unique funeral chapel.

Church of Sts Peter & Paul

The impressive Orthodox Church of SS Peter & Paul, with five polished onion domes and art-nouveau exterior murals, was apparently modelled after a similar church near Moscow. One of the church's most prominent decorations is a relief depicting Tsar Peter the Great.
