Cypriot restaurants in Cyprus

  1. A

    Hondros

A fat Cypriot bloke in an undershirt gives you 'come hither' glances from the big board above Hondros. Below is a lovely terrace shaded by vines. Tables are covered in simple pink checked cloths, the service is good and the food traditional and delicious. The menu offers all the usual Cypriot dishes, with meaty stifado (rabbit or beef stew) and kleftiko, and a variation on the tasty Turkish dish Imam Bayildi, here known as Imam (aubergines and courgettes in a tomato and garlic sauce).

The children's menu ('Kids corner') looks as if it was lifted out of a McDonald's, with a choice of chicken nuggets, fishfingers and hamburgers.

  2. Kyrenia Beach Restaurant

The closest thing to a deserted beach in this part of the island is Avdimou. As you park your car (which is the only means of getting here), a massive sign warns those inclined to nudism that there will be a heavy punishment if they even think of stripping here. As things go, this is a good indication that hardly anyone comes to this place, and that the beach is a peaceful and quiet one. Like most other beaches in Cyprus, it has no shade, and is a combination of small pebbles and sand.

The sea is not as choppy as at Kourion Beach and, with a good umbrella, this is the place for super-relaxation. Kyrenia Beach Restaurant is the only place to eat on the beach, with a wooden…

  3. Kamares Restaurant

Few tourists come this far out of town but it's worth the effort, as the quality of the food is excellent. It faces the impressive Kamares aqueduct, which is romantically floodlit at night. Try karaolia (land snails) or kouloumbra (kohlrabi cabbage) for a taste of something special. There is live music on Friday and Saturday. Take a cab to get there, and direct your driver towards the nearby K-Cineplex cinema complex.

  4. B

    Karatello

The tall ceilings of the old mill and the massive space inside gives Karatello a stylish, modern look that goes with the interesting cuisine. Dishes that stand out in tastiness are rabbit in yoghurt and lemon sauce, seasonal greens baked with feta cheese, and a delicious and neatly served kleftiko (oven-baked lamb or goat). The menu has little boxes where you tick off your order and hand it over to your waiter.

  5. Mill Restaurant

The large terrace is shady and cool, and the little river trickles past, barely turning the once-functioning mill wheel below. In the winter, you eat by the fireplace, which is just as good. Trout is a big thing here, and it comes in two forms: grilled and 'special'. The chefs won't reveal the secret of the 'special' but its tastiness speaks for itself. As with the Linos Inn, it's good to reserve a table on weekends.

  6. Arheon Gefsis

'The root of all pleasures is the satisfaction of the stomach' said Epicurus (341-270 BC). The owners of this place have taken this to heart and offer up foods that the ancient Greek philosopher himself may have feasted upon. Dine on dishes featuring figs, nuts, honey, beets, chickpeas and olives.

  7. Date Club Restaurant

Flashy and a little hard to find, this place is really popular with the well-heeled of Lefkosia, including prime ministers and presidents who come for the casserole lunches. The vanilla-white interior is a little glitzy, so dress up before you come to eat here.

  8. Old Stables

The owner of Antony's Garden House (and he should know) recommends the Old Stables. The kleftiko is tender and juicy, and the mezedes are good. Takeaway is also available. It's out on the Lemesos-Pafos road opposite the Mobil petrol station.

  9. C

    Tsambra

For a change in style, try the shaded courtyard of this Lebanese-Cypriot restaurant. Good shish kebabs, barbecued lamb, tabouleh (bulgur-wheat and parsley salad), and for dessert, mahalabia (a light, rice custard, served cold).

  10. D

    Argo

Decent kleftiko is made freshly and twice a week (Tuesday and Saturday), when it's advisable to book. The moussaka is recommended. The restaurant has a small terrace and is in the (relatively) quiet part of tourist-tastic Kato Pafos.

  12. Platanos

Where would a Cypriot village be without a restaurant called Platanos (plane tree)? And under a plane tree it certainly is. It offers nice kebabs, and the old chef makes the coffee on the hot ashes on the terrace, the traditional way.

  13. Pigasos

This is really only good for a quick snack and a cold beer, and it's right in the centre. You can breakfast on haloumi (helimi) and lountza (smoked loin of pork) sandwiches, or lahmajoun (pitta bread stuffed with spicy mince).

  14. E

    Militzis Restaurant

This place is really popular with both tourists and locals for Cypriot food. Traditional oven-cooked dishes are good here, such as the delicious kleftiko (oven-baked lamb) and tava (lamb and beef casserole).

  15. F

    Mikri Maria

This is the quintessential Cypriot taverna with home cooking and fresh food. The guitars on the walls make it look like an Andalusian tapas place where the flamenco dancers might jump out and do a quick dance as you eat.

  16. G

    Limelight

This is an old favourite in town, with charcoal-grilled dishes such as steak, lobster, fish and chicken, as well as succulent suckling lamb and pig. Not a good place for vegetarians.

  17. Village Tavern

Get your whiskers into a juicy stifado (beef and onion stew) or feast on some kleftiko (oven-baked lamb) here after a hard day's hiking. Try the house red wine.

  18. H

    Erodos

This is certainly the loveliest front yard in the Old City, on Plateia Tyllirias, abutting the Omeriye Hammam. The food is reasonable, although by no means exquisite.

  19. Symposio

Symposio is slap-bang on the beach and is popular with the tourists taking a lunch break from sunbathing. The moussaka (meat or vegetarian) is a favourite.

  20. I

    Monte Carlo

Situated right on the water's edge, Monte Carlo is a great place to dine in peace and watch the sea. Set menus are good value.

  21. J

    Esperia

Close to the water, and boasting an upmarket décor and a good location. Enormous fish and meat dishes are available.

  23. Kilada Restaurant

At the northeastern end of the long, snaking main village drag lunchtime and evening customers can try Kilada Restaurant.

  24. Estiatorio Savvas

Worth checking out - it's unadorned, simple and basic but offers good home-cooked dishes.
