Lonely Planet review
Varadero's most intriguing, intimate lodging is in the grand former residence of US chemical entrepreneur Irenée Du Pont, where eight lavish rooms tempt guests. The first large-scale building to go up at the Península de Hicacos's eastern end and an outstanding jewel in a bland architectural desert, Mansión Xanadu is still decked with the millions of dollars' worth of Cuban marble and furnishings commissioned by Du Pont in the 1930s. Rates here include unlimited tee time at the adjoining golf club (Cuba's first), also a Du Pont innovation. The Kublai Khan–inspired building alights on a small bluff, with beach access just alongside.
