Lonely Planet review for Café Literario del ‘G’

If Havana has a proverbial Left Bank, this is it, a laid-back student hangout full of arty wall scribblings and coffee-quaffing intellectuals discussing the merits of Guillén over Lorca. Kick back in the airy front patio among the green plants and dusty books and magazines (available to read, lend and buy), and keep an ear out for one of the regular trova (traditional music), jazz and poetry presentations.

Good for meeting locals, average for drinking, bad for eatin

I didn't find G Cafe anthing special either. It is certainly worth a visit for the experience. Tourists will be asked to pay in CUC - $2 for a coffee con leche. The local price is 5 CUP. Pay in CUC and it seems the tab will be 'left open' for you until finished. Pay in CUP and you must pay as you drink. There appears to be a blanket no drinking, no staying policy. If you don't purchase you will be asked to leave. I had my worst meal in Cuba (2 trips) at this place - $5 cuc for fried chicken, rice and mashed root vegetable, delivered cold to the table. Upside is that it is often full of people interested in talking to you about Cuba or your country and is a good place to improve your Spanish and them English. One warning (and this applies to much of Cuban dining experience) always get a proper bill (la quenta) when settling up. I was given a hand written 'bill' on one occasion charging me 14 cuc for something that should've cost 8 cuc. Coffee is ok here, Limonada is good.

    Good cafe

I found the Lonely Planet review a bit exaggerated, it doesn’t feel like the bohemian paradise one might expect, but it is true that there are some vaguely alternative looking students that go here, and it is a good little spot to have a drink.

    Good for: coffee, Drinks.
