Budget accommodation includes campgrounds, hostels and some guesthouses, and costs up to 450KN for a double. Midrange accommodation costs 450KN to 800KN a double, while top end starts from 800KN and can go as high as 4000KN per double. For hotels, breakfast is often included.
Private accommodation is a lot more affordable in Croatia, and is often great value. If you don’t mind forgoing hotel facilities, it’s a great way to vacation.
Accommodation providers will handle travellers’ registration with the local police, as required by Croatian authorities. To do this, they will need to take your passport away overnight.

The only hostel in the old town is a classic backpackers, warm and welcoming with a real party spirit. It’s in a quiet location tight by the city walls, close to Buža bar. All rooms and reception areas are painted in zany colours...

Friendly and well kept, it's near the beach at Borik. There's also a bright new wing that costs a little more but is worth it.
This is really a delightful option, designed and run by an Australian woman. Comfortable, clean rooms have two, four or 10 beds. Solo female travellers would be most comfortable. Trams 4, 7, 11 and 12 will get you here.
Only four bus stops east of the town centre, this new hostel is comfortable and classy. It's in a renovated 19th-century villa and has only 60 beds. Reservations are advisable in the summer.
A sociable, popular backpackers run by a very hospitable family where you’ll find free internet, local calls and tea/coffee (and shots of rakija are gratis from time to time). You have to pay for your bed (!) and extra for an en-suite dorm...
If you don't mind the crush, nowhere in central Split offers cheaper beds than this two-dorm house hostel. It's friendly, down-to-earth and just two minutes' walk from the Roman ramparts of Diocletian's Palace...
Its location is pretty good, in a quiet area 1km west of the old town, and this midsized hostel has decent, spacious if plain dorms (and one double). If you’re allowed to choose a bed (rare), the best dorms are 31 and 32 which share a roof terrace...
Only 3km south of central Pula, this hostel overlooks a beach and is near one of the region's largest discos. You can sit and sip cold beer on the terrace, where a rock band plays on some summer evenings...
Word is that this conveniently located hostel is slated for renovation, which it desperately needs. New management would help too, as well as soundproofing and a price freeze...
