Things to do in Mljet Island

  1. Stermasi

One of Dalmatia’s top restaurants, everything is done very well indeed here. Most importantly the food is flavoursome, authentic and prepared with love and skill. House specialties include vegetables, octopus or kid cooked ‘under the bell’ (200/260/300KN respectively) while wild boar with gnocchi (360KN) is almost enough for four. Or opt for a Mljet-style fish stew. The view from the terrace over the tiny islands of Saplunara bay is awesome.

  2. Kronmar Diving

Kronmar Diving offers some unusual opportunities for diving. There’s a 3rd-century Roman wreck in relatively shallow water. The remains of the ship, including amphorae, have calcified over the centuries and this has protected them from pillaging. There’s also a German torpedo boat from WWII and several walls to dive.

  3. Melita

A more romantic (and touristy) spot can’t be found on the island – this is the restaurant attached to the church on the little island in the middle of the big lake. Feast on fish, seafood and meat dishes, Mljet lobster, octopus, black risotto and local cheeses.

  4. Konoba Ankora

Right by the sea, this is the best of a strip of restaurants in Polače. The short menu, chalked up on a blackboard, usually includes grilled Mljet lamb, game, kid and whatever is fresh from the sea – try the brodetto (mixed seafood stew).

  5. Mljet National Park

The entry point for Mljet National Park is between Pomena and Polače. Your ticket includes a bus and boat transfer to the Benedictine monastery. If you stay overnight on the island you only pay the park admission once.

  6. Triton

Mainly focuses on meat, with veal and kid best cooked ‘under the bell’ – book ahead. Round off your meal with a wee nip of the owner’s home-brewed spirit collection.
