If everything's booked solid around Dubrovnik's Old Town, consider staying at the quaint town of Cavtat, 24km (15mi) away with its direct boat-link, charming stone alleyways, beautiful churches, great waterfront eateries and the unique Hotel Croatia.
If you like 70s-retro design you'll adore this activity-packed five-star resort. The guest rooms and swimming pools have been totally upgraded to 21st-century expectations. However in the sprawling public areas, the original 1973 features have been conscientiously restored, including fab Dr Who-style moon-crater ceiling panels. The 1970s feel is so authentic in some parts of the hotel that it's now a popular set for film-makers. The vast complex curves sinuously amongst the mature pine trees and even leaves holes for saplings to grow through. Many hotels have what they call a presidential suite but Croatia's room No 1001 is the real McCoy. The office area looks out onto a postcard-perfect panorama of Cavtat village, the ideal backdrop for those treaty-signing photos. The UK's Prince Charles and the late Prince Rainier of Monaco both stayed here.
