San José Restaurants

  1. La Cocina de Leña

One of the best-known restaurants in town, 'the Wood Stove' has the endearing tradition of printing its menu on brown paper bags. Typical dishes include corn soup with pork, black-bean soup, tamales, stuffed peppers and oxtail served with yucca and fried plantain. It also serves local desserts and alcoholic concoctions, including guaro , which is the highly recommended local firewater. There's live marimba music on some nights.
