Johnny's Pizzería
Johnny's has been serving up wood-fired, thin-crust pizzas since 1993. We're partial to its original Traviesa with artichoke hearts, mushrooms, red onion and tomato sauce spiced with oregano, but the Monteverde sounds good too. Think: prosciutto, green olives and home-grown organic leeks. There's a warm and elegant atmosphere, and the tapas bar upstairs serves mussels, tortilla soup and mixed ceviche.

Pizzería Restaurante Lilliana
This great spot for Italian fare offers more than a dozen different kinds of pizza, all of which are made from scratch and a sight more authentic than most of the pies in the country. The lovely mountain views and old-world environs make this a pleasant place to spend an afternoon.

Pane e Vino
Delicate superthin-crust pizza comes in 90 different variations at this rustic San Pedro family spot, where you can satisfy your cravings for salame picante (pepperoni). The heaping bowls of pasta are a deal, including the delicious pasta pane e vino, penne in a light tomato sauce studded with artichokes and mushrooms. There is a decent selection of wine (from US$8).

Rioasis
There’s pizza, and then there’s pizza – this much loved pizzeria definitely falls into the latter category, especially since there are more than 30 different kinds of pies on the menu. Of course, considering that each one emerges from an authentic wood-fired oven, and is topped with gourmet ingredients from both Costa Rica and abroad, you really can’t go wrong here.

Pizzeria Playa Carmen
Playa Carmen's most conspicuous pizza joint is this splashy restaurant right on the playa, which makes it ideal for sundowners. They do every conceivable sandwich and pasta you can imagine, but get the pizza. That's what they're known for.

Pizza Tree
As you head north, after you pass the turn to Playa Coyote and are almost into San Miguel proper you'll come across a fantastically whimsical tree-house pizzeria in Javillal. Italian-owned and operated, they serve crispy thin-crust pizzas and foccacia prepared in a wood-fired brick oven.

Pizzamail.it
Sure most Costa Rican pizza are fairly pathetic affairs and it doesn't instill lots of confidence when you see a restaurant named after a website. Still, all doubts will be cast aside when a server at Pizzamail.it brings out the pie: a thin-crust, wood-fired piece of Italy in the middle of the jungle. From its small patio diners can watch squawking macaws in the trees over the soccer pitch. Bellissimo!

A new and savory smelling pizza joint, they also do an assortment of wraps, pastas and salads, and a lovely fresh, stuffed trout steamed in banana leaf. They don't serve alcohol.

La Dolce Vita
Set in the Pueblito Sur development, this is the local expat choice for wood-fired pizza in Playa Del Coco. The restaurant is lovingly set in a brick courtyard around a gurgling fountain, sprinkled with candlelit tables. They also do a range of pastas, a nice yellow fin tuna seared and drenched in a lime, caper, olive and cherry tomato sauce, and scald steaks and chops too.

Ten ranch-style rooms with hot-water bathrooms have rustic wooden furnishings. There’s an inviting pool, as well, but you're here for their succulent, open-air pizzeria that serves authentic wood-fired pies in the evenings.

La Baula
By far the best pizza in Tamarindo – this casual open-air restaurant has real wood-fired pizzas, pastas and other Italian fare. It’s also one of the most family-friendly restaurants in town, with a playground to keep the kids entertained.
