Introducing La Palma & Around
About 9km southeast of Rincón, the town of La Palma is the origin of the rough road that turns into the trail to the Los Patos ranger station. The soda (eating establishment) at the village’s only intersection serves as bus depot, information center and breakfast nook. If you are hiking across Corcovado, this will likely be the starting point or ending point of your trek. Note that travelers have reported getting mugged on the road from La Palma to Los Patos, so keep your wits about you and travel in a group.

There’s not much to this town, save a few pulperías and the requisite soda. If you are headed into Corcovado, you can stock up on provisions for your hike here. The surrounding landscape is flat farmland – a stark contrast to the lush greenery in the park. A beautiful sand and coral beach, known as Playa Blanca, is at the east end of town. The Reserva Indígena Guaymí is southwest of here, on the border of Parque Nacional Corcovado (for information about the Guaymí, see p442).
