Playa Carrillo hotels and hostels
Most hotels are at the eastern end of the beach on a hill. The beach is a five- to 10-minute walk down from places.
Hacienda Del Mar Guanacaste
La Tropicale
Across from La Selva is a fun, funky, fabulous inn that has ramshackle charm and plenty of hip touches. Rooms are actually stand-alone bungalows draped with lovely linens and blessed with gorgeous screened baths that feel more outside than in.
Carrillo Club
This pretty yellow inn on the hillside has a clutch of comfortable, attractive, if aging cabinas with a private terrace, full kitchen and hot-water bathroom. There’s a pool with ocean views, and the beach is a short walk downhill.
Hotel Arena Blanca
Designed like a modern-day hacienda, this hotel employs rustic detail with contemporary polish. Backed by trees, the low-lying building circles a pool area, and the beach is only 150m away. Staff can arrange tours.
Casa Buenavista
A sweet Italian couple runs this two-room B&B. Each basic but homey room has its own hot-water bathroom, porch and entrance, there’s a small shaded yoga terrace in the garden, and they offer high-quality shiatsu massage (per hour US$35).
Cabinas El Colibrí
These Argentine-run cabinas are huge with vaulted beamed ceilings, hammocks on the porch, cable TV, wi-fi and hot water. Mini-apartments with kitchenette are the same price but don’t include breakfast.
Camping Mora
At the western end of the beach, this campsite has showers, bathrooms, electricity and potable water.
Hotel Esperanza
Cheerful rooms at this recently remodeled hotel are set back from a columned promenade and open on to the pool area. The rooms are a bit small, but packed with amenities such as cable TV, DVD player, hair dryer and tropical artwork.
Popo's Surf Camp
Here's an inviting huddle of aging but attractive, two-story wooden cabinas overlooking the river. They have full kitchens and are set in town just above the beach.
Puerto Carrillo Hotel
A dozen or so comfy, three-star caliber rooms are arced around an inviting pool at this low-key spot popular with Tico families. Rooms are spotless with high ceilings, a splash of color, and are terrific value.
