Puntarenas
If you’re looking for a bit more space to stretch your legs, this upmarket hotel (for Puntarenas at least) offers enormous family-style rooms and apartments at surprisingly affordable prices.
Puntarenas
Opened in 1959, this is the most established hotel in Puntarenas, where prices vary according to the room. It’s worth spending a few extra dollars for the larger ones, which have sweeping views of the sea.
Puntarenas
Well situated near the bus stations, this dilapidated and rickety wooden structure still manages to retain a little old-world charm.

Fairly basic rooms are clean and well kept with rickety overhead fans and buzzing TVs, though you’d be wise to opt for a room with bathroom as the shared facilities leave a lot to be desired.
Puntarenas
This no-nonsense budget option is an excellent choice. Pastel-painted rooms have functional overhead fans and screened windows, which means you’ll sleep deeply without needing air-con.
Montezuma
A stone lodge built into a lush inlet of remnant jungle, the upstairs rooms have high palm-beamed ceilings, wood furnishings, cable TV, and new tile throughout, but the downstairs standard rooms aren't worth the cash.
Montezuma
Montezuma
A small, tucked-away property worth considering, rooms in this older atrium-style guesthouse won't wow you, but the mosaic mix-match tile is cool and all rooms have aircon, mini fridge, cable TV and security boxes.
Montezuma
The best budget deal in town – you can’t beat the location of these beachfront cabinas in the heart of Montezuma. Simple but clean rooms have fan, bathroom and free wi-fi.
Montezuma
On the northern edge of town on a hilltop overlooking the bay is this delightful German-US–run budget option that’s terrific value.
Montezuma
Simple, basic but clean rooms with air-con and fridge, set on a rocky headland off the main road near Chico's Bar. They overlook a lovely palm and flower garden and a sweet slice of sea.
Montezuma
This hillside hotel has 15 luxurious stained-wood cabinas of various sizes and amenities (some have a stone bathroom and ocean views).
