Hotel Chorotega
Next to the Río Chipanzo in a quiet residential neighborhood, and run by a pleasant family that keeps small, dark, bare-bones rooms clean and neat.
Most sleeping options have cold showers. Super Compro and Palí supermarkets provide food and supplies for self-caterers. There are also a number of cheap sodas in the mercado that are good for a quick bite.

This hotel is decent and mercifully far from the noise of the plaza, though it's on a relatively busy road. The 28 rooms are clean (though rough around the edges), with cable TV and private bathrooms.
It ain't Shangri La, but rooms are bright enough, clean enough, air-conditioned, have cable TV, and are a damned decent value. Try to get one in the cooler, darker halls rather than the noisier ones facing the street.
Tommy and Antje, the German owners, have built a beachfront house and ‘multicolored’ (in case you were wondering what Kunterbunt meant) cabinas right beside a peaceful section of the beach.
