Montezuma

Restaurants in Montezuma

  1. A

    Orgánico

When they say ‘pure food made with love,’ they mean it – this healthy cafe turns out nine vegetarian or vegan dishes including spicy Thai burgers, a sopa azteca with tofu, burritos, falafel, smoothies and other meat-free treats you can feel good about. But they do meat dishes, like spaghetti Bolognese, too. Whaddaya want? They're Italian. They have live music almost nightly, including an open mic on Monday nights.

    Vaca Loca

A very cute new cafe with one long, built-in, wrap-around booth. It's Italian owned, and she does meatball subs and plates, chicken Milanese, chicken parmigiana, and assorted salads and fish tacos.

    Soda Monte El Sol

A cute hole-in-the-wall soda that does all the tipica dishes, tasty and affordable casados, pasta, burgers and a variety of juices and smoothies. All is served on pressed tablecloths in a humble dining room touched with grace. It gets packed at lunch.

    Bar Restaurante Moctezuma

An unapologetically Mediterranean restaurant overlooking the sea, where they steam mussels and clams, broil Spanish-style octopus, slice smoked fish Carpaccio, crush and spice gazpacho soup, grill shrimp, lobster and fish filet and even serve burgers and chicken sandwiches. It's usually packed.

    Puggo’s

A locally beloved restaurant decorated like a Bedouin tent that specializes in Middle Eastern cuisine including falafel, hummus, kebabs, and aromatic fish, which they dress in imported spices and herbs and roast whole. Cap it off with a strong cup of Turkish coffee.

    Playa de los Artistas

This artfully decorated beachside spot is the most adored and romantic restaurant in town and one of the very best on the peninsula. The international menu with heavy Mediterranean influences changes daily depending on locally available ingredients, though you can always count on fresh seafood roasted in the wood oven and presented impeccably. We had a superb oven-roasted tuna shank smothered in olive oil, diced tomatoes and onions that was pink in the middle and perfectly crisp at the skin. Pair it with something fine from their wine list or choose among half-dozen international beers on offer.

  9. El Sano Banano

This restaurant is way overpriced for simple dishes – 12 bucks for a casado? But it’s worth showing up in the evening when the restaurant shows nightly films for ₡3000 minimum consumption.

    Cocolores

One of the best restaurants in Montezuma, beachside Cocolores has a pleasant, thatched-roof patio for candlelit dinners. The menu focuses on Tico–Mediterranean fusion. The curry and coconut shrimp with spicy mango chutney is divine as are the mahi mahi fajitas and their five flavors of spaghetti. Prices aren't cheap but portions are ample. Don't miss it.

By day, it’s a quaint cafe with homemade bagels, bread and breakfast sandwiches. At night, it becomes a popular hookah bar with tasty tapas.

  13. Bakery Café

Grab a chair on the outdoor patio of this homey place with an international menu featuring everything from Indian and Thai to Mexican and Italian. The best time to dine is breakfast, for fantastic omelettes, pancakes, homemade banana bread and French toast. The frolicking bird and monkey show in the garden is free.
