Lonely Planet review

One of the most innovative and sustainable hotels we’ve ever seen, Celeste Mountain Lodge is proof that one can be ecofriendly without giving up comfort or style. The French owner, Joels Marchel, moved to Canada and became one of Costa Rica's first and best international travel champions, and booked countless tour groups and families into dream Tico holidays for decades, all the while fantasizing about the perfect jungle lodge. This is it, and the contemporary open-air hilltop lodge in the shadow of Volcán Tenorio is absolutely stunning. It was built in 2007 using ecofriendly materials such as recycled wood, plastic, old truck tires and coconut fiber. Lamps, sculptures and other decorative items are made of scrap metal. Hot water comes from solar power, and cooking gas is partially produced by kitchen waste. There’s even an ingenious hot tub heated by burning salvaged wood. Nothing in the building was imported, except for Marchel. The self-proclaimed ‘radical’ believes we all need to change the way we travel, including ‘unplugging’ on holiday, so you won’t find TVs, hair dryers or other gizmos here. But elegance is not spared in the slightest. The 18 rooms are four-star stylish with colorful accents, concrete tiled floors and wooden shutters that open onto immobilizing volcano and jungle vistas (also visible from the hip common atrium). The property features labyrinthine gardens, a soccer pitch, and a 2km interpretive hiking trail laid with geotextile (no more muddy shoes!), which makes for soundless hiking in one of Costa Rica’s prime bird-watching zones. The price includes all meals at the amazing organic restaurant and service is simply outstanding. The lodge is located at the end of a 3.5km-long, rough (4WD required) access road that begins at the northern end of Bijagua.

Our independent authors have visited Celeste Mountain Lodge and selected this as one of our recommended accommodation in Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio.
