Wondering if anyone has information on the access point to the Rincon crater/volcano. Is the access via the National Park entrance?? We are looking at hotels (Rinconcito lodge) near the Park entrance on the south side of the Park, but the maps I'm looking at seem to suggest that the volcano access is on the north side of the Park...2 hours drive away.

Can anyone shed some light on this??

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a trip for next month, and am torn between the Carribbean coast (Cahuita and south, then Bocas), or Uvita area and Drake Bay. I am a solo traveler, interested in seeing some wildlife, beachtime, and relaxing.

I know that the Carribbean side is usually drier than other parts of the country at this time. Has anyone been to Drake Bay recently? I'm wondering how el nino/la nina has affected the rainfall there (if it's heavier or more frequent than usual) and if I fly to…

Total information overload ...

I'm taking my family of five to CR, flying into SJ and plan on renting a car, once I serpentine through the rental/insurance maze ;-)

I was planning on renting a home in the Herradura / Jaco area so we can have a base to do adrenaline type activities (hearing that Jaco might not be "rated PG-13 family friendly" concerns me, although we are from the NYC area, perhaps we would feel at home). My wife however is a bit of a beach person and from my readings, it seems…

Going to CR in August, was going to rent a 4x4 for our trip from LIR->Arenal->Malpais. I've driven in CR on several trips, but never during the rainy season. From what I am reading, the stretch on the back of the Gulf of Nicoya getting to Malpais seems like it can be pretty sketchy in the rainy season? I don't mind bumpy, potholed, muddy roads, but I am a little concerned about hitting rivers that may not be passable, and getting stuck on the road in the middle of nowhere. I used to drive…

I haven't been to CR in about 8 years, and I don't recall what we paid for a car rental, but I'm trying to figure out how the mandatory insurance works. I looked at rental options via Expedia and the price for 10 days for a small SUV was $75 ... total. I know that can't be correct, and I assume insurance will be added upon pickup. I looked up the fine print on expedia and it said "All mandatory insurance coverage is included in the price you pay Expedia.

So, a couple of questions .. I am…

Hi everyone,

I'm traveling solo next month from the States, and am thinking about visiting Cahuita for 2-3 days and then going to Bocas del Toro. A couple of questions:
Cahuita national park
Is it not recommended to hike in the park alone? (I live in a large city, so would take the regular precautions, of course -- would not go early/later in day, or carry valuables)
Would a guided tour give you more in terms of the experience, and would anyone have a person they recommended?
How rough are the…

Hi all,
- - I am considering volunteering at Tree of Life in Cahuita, CR. Looking for anyone who has done this. I am interested in hearing about your experience & opinion of the rescue. I have read rave reviews about it. The only negative things I can find are posted by people who don't seem to understand the process at all. I have spent time at Paseos Los Monos in Ecuador and loved it. Extremely hard work when I was there, immeasurable reward.
- - A bit about me: After many, many trips to…
