The ARA Project
Lonely Planet review
Richard and Margot Frisius founded this crucial and successful green and scarlet macaw breeding program in 1992. After Margot passed away in 2008, the non-profit took a name change, but continues in the Frisius' vision to reintroduce macaws into the wild. The ARA Project offers volunteer opportunities at both the breeding center and release sites (from US$10 to US$23 per person per day, including accommodations). See the website for details. Guided tours of the breeding center can be arranged by appointment. Three kilometers south of Alajuela, it’s tricky to find; get directions.
