    Escalofrío

Here you’ll find more than 20 different flavors of gelato, which may just be the perfect way to beat the tropical heat. There is also a spacious alfresco seating area where you can sample other Italian treats including espressos and cappuccinos as well as an assortment of pizzas (which come from a lovely wood-fired oven) and pastas. It also has a deli across the street where travelers can get sandwiches with imported Italian meats and cheeses to take into Manuel Antonio.

    Dos Locos

This popular Mexican restaurant is the regular watering hole for the local expat community, and sometimes serves as a venue for the occasional live band. It opens onto the central cross streets of town and its fun for people-watching and cheap Imperials. It has an English-language trivia night every Thursday.

  3. La Playita

At the far western end of Playa Espadilla, beyond a rocky headland (wear sandals), is one of Costa Rica's most famous gay beaches and a particular draw for young men. For years it was also one of Costa Rica's only nude beaches, but the nearby construction of a big hotel seems to have ended that tradition, and those who bathe in the buff have been known to suffer police harassment. The beach is inaccessible one hour before and after the high tide, so time your walk well. Also, don’t be fooled – you do not need to pay to use the beaches as they’re outside the park.
