About 200m north of the village, Tortuguero's original turtle-conservation organization operates a research station, visitor center and museum. Exhibits focus on all things turtle-related, including a 20-minute video about the history of local turtle conservation. STC also runs a highly reputable environmental volunteer program.

During nesting season, volunteers can observe turtle tagging and assist with egg counts and biometric data collection. During bird-migration seasons, they help with mist-netting and point-counts. Volunteer fees (starting at US$1524) include accommodations, meals and transport to and from San José.
