This rustic inn, run by the personable Annette and Herbie, has four little wood cabins on a 2-hectare hillside above the Río Blanco. It is blessedly devoid of niceties such as cable TV and wi-fi.
Just 1km north of the Servicentro Santa Clara, this business resort has a bland Holiday Inn vibe, but the 98 rooms are spacious and tidy, and the grounds meticulously maintained.
Situated on the Río San Juan in the community of Trinidad, this budget lodge is right across from the Nicaraguan border crossing and is pretty much the only gig in town.
For its location on the main drag, this clean, mint-green place feels surprisingly serene, especially in the rooms in back. All 34 tidy rooms are equipped with cable TV and fan. Rooms with air-conditioning have hot water.

This seaside hotel has simple, whitewashed rooms and a breezy, ocean-view restaurant that serves everything from burgers to jumbo shrimp. It’s about 2.5km from the entrance to the docks at Moín.
About 3km northwest of Limón, on the inland side of the road, these cozy pink bungalows are decorated with lace curtains and bamboo furniture. The small pool is a huge perk, as this place does not have beach access.
On the south side of the soccer field, rooms here are simple but spacious and clean, have hot showers and ceiling fans. The onsite restaurant is slightly pricey (mains US$4 to US$16), though it offers some of the freshest seafood in town.
The ’60s-style modernist building is in a ramshackle state, but the place is generally clean. The 39 rooms are basic: bare linoleum floors and aged wood furnishings, some with creaky air-con units, though all have hot-water bathrooms.
West of Guápiles, a 45-minute 4WD trip and three-hour hike will take you 800m above sea level to this 410-hectare rainforest reserve in a critical buffer zone adjacent to Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo.
Accessible by 4WD only, this working cattle ranch truly gets you away from it all. Tidy, lemon-yellow cabinas are heated by wood stoves and contain full kitchens, and the area offers fantastic views of Volcán Turrialba.
About 1km west of Puerto Viejo near La Guaíra, this countryside retreat offers bright tiled rooms that are well equipped with private hot-water shower and cable TV.
This slightly musty, reasonably clean spot has 24 rooms with cool-water showers. Get a room in the back to avoid street noise. To get here from the main highway, turn north at the road west of Burger King.
Located about 3km east of Guápiles, on a hill above the northern side of the highway, this efficient roadside hotel has clean guestrooms, a restaurant serving local food and a recreation room with pool tables.
Limón’s best budget option is this 14-room hotel towards the north end of downtown that is staffed by friendly, young employees.
About 3km northwest of Limón, on the ocean side, is this 56-room hilltop hotel with spacious thatch-roofed, white-stucco bungalows dotting a well-maintained garden. Rooms come equipped with cable TV and minifridge.
About 1km west of the center, this recommended B&B has eight quaint cabins in its garden, each with a colorful paint job, stone tile, high beamed ceilings, hot water and outdoor table and chairs.
Sitting on a 100-hectare reserve about 4km northeast of Puerto Viejo, this former cattle hacienda is cozy, quaint and a bird-watching haven.
When they say remote, they mean remote: this private reserve, which comprises 13 sq km of high-altitude tropical rainforest, is accessible only to overnight guests willing to make the three-hour tractor ride (seriously!) up a steep, muddy hill to.
Adventure-oriented tour groups make up the majority of guests at Sueño Azul, a top-end adventure lodge upon a hill.
