Just looking for advice on an itinerary for my family trip to Costa Rica in July. We're a family of 4, one 7 year old and one little one just under a year old. My wife and I visited the Mal Pais area years ago and loved it. We're planning to rent a 4x4. My wife and I traveled quite a bit before having kids but this will be the first trip outside North America with the whole family. We're very active in the outdoors and lean more towards the adventurous/ budget end of things rather than…

Those initials stand for Mother Of All Strikes which is currently happening in Costa Rica. I have said it before and I am saying it again, Costa Rica has huge financial problems. I had just talked to a friend of mine that is a school teacher and she told me that they hadn't been paid, once again, for two months. The last time they didn't get paid for four months. If you have a trip planned in the next few days, expect road blocks from the airport to San Jose.

The following is what I read…

Hi, I have seen your recommendations to stay in Alajuela coming/going from flights. There are so many places, have some recommendations for reasonably quiet places in walking distance from town for food/drinks. Looking for nicer places around $100.
I only found an old thread on the domestic airlines, and I apologize as I know I read pros/cons but can't find them for Natureair/Sansa. Does one have better windows for sightseeing?
Going to Puerto Jiminez and Samara.
Thanks!!

Hi dear seasoned travellers,

I have found lots of incredibly useful advice here but first time posting. Sister and I are travelling to Costa Rica for a short trip in a few weeks(Saturday morning to Friday Morning), arriving and departing from San Jose. There are some great suggestions on this site for things to see but I have a hard time prioritising, as in 5.5 days we can only see 2 (or maxxx 3) places. A bit about us:

  • cost conscious (but open to car rental), here for the experience, happy…

Hello!

I'm arriving in CR in late October to work as a volunteer with animals until about 20th of December (flexible on dates) and after working hard for that long I'd love to spend Christmas on a lovely beach with white sand and crystal blue sea (then party like there's no tomorrow on New Years :P ) If it's possible to snorkel somewhere at this time as well that would be great, or spot leatherback turtles.

I am backpacking alone, and was leaning towards Manuel Antonio, but I'd hate for my…

I am looking for a guidebook about Costa Rica for my Travel there in December.
I found; Lonely Planet Costa Rica and Lonely Planet Discover Costa Rica
In the description I cannot really tell the difference and also the guy at the bookstore has no clue (books are not in store)
Can anyone advise me which one to get? or both? or is there a new edition due before December?

thanks for your advice.

Kind Regards Werner.

Hi, we are a small family (one 10 year old child) flying into Liberia and exploring Guanacaste for two weeks. We are all seasoned travelers and enjoy the journey just as much as the destination. We have matured out of hostels and into mid-level accommodations (basic locally owned places are more our style). One of us prefers to have an idea of places to stay, things to see, and the other is stressed out by the thought of being obligated to a hotel or town (the third just wants to know if the…

Hey,
I found a really great deal on flights to Liberia, and am flying in under a week. I want to sit on the beach, and do nothing. And eat lots of rice and beans.

I was in Costa Rica a few years ago, did the touristy stuff, and had a great time. Now I just need to relax!

I wanted to head to Samara, but it seems pretty expensive to do on your own. I had a quote for a one way taxi for $140 US, which seems a little crazy. I land at 12.30 in the afternoon, and then fly back out at 1.20 in the…

Hi there! I know this question of suggested itineraries for a family trip to CR has been asked 100 times here I am sure, I searched through posts however, and can't find one that speaks to the particular details I am concerned with so I decided to post my inquiry! So even if you've replied to others, please consider replying again here, and thanks in advance :-)

I am planning my own hopefully one month adventure in CR for the end of July/beginning of August..I am an experienced traveler, low…

Good Day!

We are retired folks wth modest budgets. We have been invited to attend a wedding. The wedding will be at a hotel, the Westin Playa Conchal. This hotel offers an airport transfer. The price is too high for us. Can a kindly person describe, in detail, the process of traveling by bus from the airport near Libreria to the Westin? We are arriving on a Friday in the early afternoon.

Thanks so much!
