Here are the terms and conditions which apply to Lonely Planet's Beautiful World promotion. They include permission for us to use your entry after the competition (see: What happens to my entry? below). Please read all terms carefully - they contain important stuff you should know. By submitting your entry, you agree that these conditions of entry apply to your entry.
The promoter is Lonely Planet Publications Pty Limited (ABN 36 005 607 983) of 90 Maribyrnong Street, Footscray, Victoria 3011 Australia. Our friends at World Expeditions PTY LTD (ABN 36 127 619 925) of Level 5, 71 York St, Sydney, NSW, 2000, Australia are our promotional partner.
Information about the prizes and how to enter form part of these conditions of entry. Any changes to these conditions of entry will be published at http://www.lonelyplanet.com/photocomp , so you should check these conditions of entry regularly. These conditions of entry are governed by the laws of Australia.
You must be 18 years of age or older to enter this competition. The laws in some places don't allow Lonely Planet to run this promotion, in which case the promotion and these conditions of entry are void in those places. Also, you can't enter this promotion if you (or your immediate families or housemates) are employed by Lonely Planet, World Expeditions PTY LTD, or their subsidiaries and affiliated companies.
To enter, take a photograph that represents one of the following themes: 'Celebration', 'Community', 'Untamed' or 'Space'. Once you've taken your picture you can enter in one of two ways:
Tweet your photograph from your Twitter account and tag your entry with #lpbeautifulworld and #contest. You must also mention "@lonelyplanet" in your tweet in order for us to receive your entry (if you don't, it's possible your entry could be filtered out of search results, and we won't receive it); OR
Go to our Beautiful World competition page at http://www.lonelyplanet.com/photocomp You can log in using your Facebook or Twitter account login details, or you can enter your name and email address directly at the competition page. Once you've logged in / entered your details and checked the box to accept these terms and conditions, click on the ìUploadî button to upload your photo from your computer or, where you've logged in with your Facebook or Twitter details, you can also upload a photograph from your Facebook, Instagram or Flickr account. Photos are accepted in jpeg, gif or png formats. Finally, write a description of your photo and choose the category you would like to enter it in.
You don't have to buy anything to enter. You can enter between 12am AEST on 8th October 2013 and 12am AEST on 6th January 2014. Your entry is received at the time Lonely Planet receives it. Incomplete and invalid entries will not be accepted. If your entry gets lost in cyberspace or doesn't arrive for any other reason, that's not Lonely Planet's fault.
All entries will be displayed at http://www.lonelyplanet.com/photocomp and will be open to public vote. You can enter 10 photographs a day and vote up to 200 times each day during the promotion period but you cannot vote for your own entry. Lonely Planet reserves the right to disqualify any entrant who has engaged in unlawful or improper conduct that is designed to jeopardise the fair conduct of the promotion or is generally damaging to the reputation of Lonely Planet, or has otherwise breached these conditions of entry (as determined in Lonely Planet's sole discretion).
Lonely Planet might have to extend the dates of the promotion but only if it's totally unavoidable (for example, if the competition entry page is unavailable for 24 hours or more) and we'll let you know if we do.
Rather than consulting tea leaves, finalists will be chosen as follows:
Two judges will review all eligible entries and judge them based on creativity and best representation of the category theme. A finalist will be selected for each category.
Whichever photograph receives the most votes from the public will also be chosen as a finalist.
A third (independent) judge will review all finalists and select the best overall entry. The finalists will all be judged on creativity and best representation their category theme.
The unenviable task of judging will happen in a small, dark room at BBC Media Centre, 201 Wood Lane, London, W12 7TQ, United Kingdom, on 13th January 2014 (or at an undisclosed location otherwise determined as required by Lonely Planet). The judges' decision is final (so there!) and no correspondence will be entered into, even if you think that sucks. Lady luck has nothing to do with this promotion.
Lonely Planet can cancel or modify the promotion if there are compelling technical or administrative reasons which we cannot control. If that happens, Lonely Planet will choose the winner(s) from all eligible entries received at that time.
The Grand Prize Winner will receive:
A place for one person on World Expeditions' 17 day Tibet with Richard l'Anson tour (trip code RIT). Detailed tour information, inclusions and itinerary are available via World Expeditions Tour Page.
Please note that this tour departs on 24th April 2014. If the winner is unable to travel on 24th April 2014 the Tibet tour will be replaced with the Lhasa tour below. This tour is provided by World Expeditions - approximate retail value AUD$4,990.
A place for one person on World Expeditions 14 day High Road to Lhasa tour (trip code: HRL). Detailed tour information, inclusion, itinerary and departure dates are available at World Expeditions Tour Page.
Please note that the prize winner must depart before 31 December 2014. Tour is provided by World Expeditions - approximate retail value AUD$3290.
Both tours are subject to subject to the trip reaching minimum numbers to depart. If you do not wish to share a room with another tour participant, a single supplement of AUD$430 will be payable. All Finalists will receive:
We'll give the winner the good news by email and their name(s) will be published on www.lonelyplanet.com within 2 days after selection. If youre riddled with curiosity, send an email to CS_Comps@lonelyplanet.com.au (including the name of the promotion) within 3 months of the closing date of the promotion, and we'll respond and tell you who won.
Lonely Planet will do its best to find the winners. But if we cant, or a winner hasnt accepted the prize by 9th April 2014, the next best entry as chosen by the judges will be declared the winner.
We may ask you to provide proof of identify, residency and age, so that we are sure you are who you say you are and are eligible to receive the prize. We'll decide whether the proof you provide is adequate (but generally speaking, a certified copy of your passport or drivers licence will be sufficient). If you cant provide, or refuse to provide, suitable proof, then unfortunately you will be disqualified, and we will choose another winner.
You cant exchange the prize for cash, or ask us to give it to someone else (not that you'd want to!). The World Expedition tours cannot be used in conjunction with any other discounts or offers. We will use reasonable efforts to award the prize as described but if, due to unforeseen circumstances, we are unable to do that, well substitute it either for cash or another prize of comparable value, but well decide which.
You'll be responsible for all taxes, insurance, meals, pre / post night hotels and airport transfers, domestic transfers, spending money, sightseeing activities (beyond those included as part of the prize), any forced stopover accommodation or other ancillary costs not mentioned in the detailed trip notes or within these terms and conditions including any other expenses, fees and costs connected with the prize that are not included in the prize description. If, in order to take the prize, youre lucky enough to need a valid passport and/or other necessary travel documentation and visas, youll need to sort those out for yourself (including finding out what documents you need).
You are responsible for your use of the prize, including complying with any applicable terms and conditions of use. Of course, if you win a prize, youll be good and comply with all relevant laws, rules and regulations.
Please note that the nature of the prize may be such that it poses health or safety risks, or risks normally associated with travel to you. For this reason, you and your guest should consider any health, safety and travel risks and take appropriate precautions (including arrange insurances) to guard against those risks.
Lonely Planet is not responsible for use of the prize which results in:
