Things to do in San Agustín

  1. Archeological Park

The 78-hectare archeological park is 2.5km west of the town of San Agustín. There are in total about 130 statues in the park, either found in situ or collected from other areas, including some of the best examples of San Agustín statuary. Plan on spending around three hours in the park. Guides congregate in the museum’s outdoor cafe, but you don’t really need one.

  2. Donde Richard

This grill restaurant on the road to the Parque Archaeológico does the best food in town. The asado huilense, the local specialty of slow-cooked, marinated pork, is not to be missed. A great spot for lunch on the way back from the park.

  5. Surabhi

Run by a former hotel chef, this small restaurant produces a very good Colombian set meal. The juices are excellent, and there’s actually something resembling a salad on your plate. Great value.

  6. Pizza Manía

Owned by an expat German woman, this small shopfront sells great, freshly made pizza. She even makes her own chorizo, and on weekends, lasagna from scratch.

  7. El Fogón

The set menu at lunch time is good value (COP$4000) but dinner (COP$14,000) is overpriced. El Fogón also serves as a central landmark in the town.

  8. Territorio Libre

Territorio Libre is a rocking disco opposite El Fogón – in the chilly wee hours it lights a small bonfire out back.

  9. Restaurante Brahama

The place to come if you’re in dire need of a vegetarian meal. The thick chocolate pancakes are reportedly excellent, too.
