Bus & boat

Mompós is well off the main routes, but can be reached relatively easily from different directions by road and river. Whichever way you come, however, the journey is time consuming. As Mompós lies between two unbridged rivers, any trip involves a ferry or boat crossing.

Most travelers come to Mompós from Cartagena. Unitransco has a direct bus daily, leaving Cartagena at 7:30am (US$15, eight hours). It's faster to take a bus to Magangué (US$11, four hours; half-a-dozen departures per day with Brasilia), change to a chalupa (boat) to Bodega (US$2, 20 minutes, frequent departures until about 3pm) and continue by colectivo to Mompós (US$2.50, 40 minutes). There may also be direct chalupas from Magangué to Mompós.

If you depart from Bucaramanga, take a bus to El Banco (US$13.50, seven hours) and continue to Mompós by jeep or boat (either costs US$9 and takes about two hours); jeep is a bit faster but the trip is bumpy.

In Mompós, a Unitransco bus to Cartagena (US$13.50) departs at 6:30am from near Iglesia de Santa Bárbara. Colectivos to Bodega and El Banco park on Calle 18 just off the Plaza de Bolívar. Boats to Magangué and El Banco anchor just off the Plaza Real de la Concepción.
