  2. Ugh. Tourists.

    Blog: Hecktic Travels - 15 April 2010

Take the most abundant Colonial architecture we've seen to date. Add some Caribbean flair in the form of walls plastered with brilliant colors and bright flowers hanging out of every window. Put it all within 13km of centuries-old stone walls. Throw in some soft lighting and scores of cobble stone streets. What you've got is a recipe for one of the most romantic and beautiful city settings in South America.

  3. 第四十七天:Cartagena,我來了!

Blog: Diaries of a Vagabonding Couple - 5 April 2010

Blog: The Road Chose Me - 50,000kms of ebb and flow - 30 March 2010

I originally toyed with the idea of sailing from Panama to Colombia through the San Blas Islands, a stunningly beautiful trip by all accounts. A number things made it not work out that way: Sailing is about $375-$400 and takes 3 – 5 days. We couldn’t leave Panama City until the ship with our container [...]

  6. Day 48: Volcano Mudbathing!

Blog: Diaries of a Vagabonding Couple - 30 March 2010

This is the ultimate spa experience - bathing in thick gooey mud! Like a deformed midget, Volcan el Totumo spews not lava but mud. At about 2 floors high, it's almost a joke this is a volcano; technically I guess it is. Though the crater is tiny (and a little disappointingly so), squeezing in with everyone else was part of the fun. We dipped in, not knowing how deep it was or how to stay

  7. Day 47: In the land of coffee and cocaine

Blog: Diaries of a Vagabonding Couple - 29 March 2010

After 5 days of civilized living (ie. air conditioned city life!), we are back on the road again. There was a little tingle of the feeling we had when we left Canada and our "settled down" lifestyle. I was definitely excited about seeing South America, but I felt a hint of travelers' fatigue weighing down on me. Long bus rides again, hot sweaty days, insect bites... Wouldn't it be nice to have a

  8. Discover Cartagena, Colombia

    Blog: Two Backpackers - 4 March 2010

After two long days of sailing the open seas Cartagena’s skyline slowly revealed itself to us as we approached its harbor.  It appeared majestic, especially for those of us (me) who spent 48 hours in bed fighting sea sickness.  Land!  And a beautiful land it was. Cartagena is a city on the northern coast of Colombia [...]

  9. Sweating in the Getsemani neighbourhood of Cartagena, Colombia

    Blog: Trip Down - 27 February 2010

As the banana boat pulled up to the multitude of unavailable berths in Turbo (apparently one of the most dangerous towns in Colombia) we felt like we might finally be able to get on land and drive our bikes after 6 days of boat travel. After unloading the bikes down rickety planks through a crowd of [...]

By Rob Packer, KF10 Colombia One of the things that attracts people to the Kiva Fellowship is the chance to visit places they would never visit otherwise. Over the past three weeks with the Fundación Mario Santo Domingo (FMSD), I’ve been to barrios in Bogotá, Barranquilla and Cartagena that I would never have visited otherwise. [...]

  11. Cartagena - it's a delight

Blog: A Travel Diary from Mexico, Central and South America - 10 January 2010

Being so late that you think you're going to miss your flight is a horrible and stressful situation and one I don't intend on repeating. A combination of events led to a mad dash for the gate and somehow we made it - the full story is admirably covered in Viva Latin America

  12. Cartagena and the Canoe Pirates

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 6 January 2010

Cartagena is known for its beautiful beaches, and none more so than those on the islands off the coast.  The popular thing to do when here is to get yourself on a boat trip out to one of more of the islands, and this almost always culminates with a few hours on Playa Blanca, possibly [...]

  13. The Many Sides To Cartagena

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 6 January 2010

I was given to understand that Cartagena, on the northern coast, was the best place in Colombia to see colonial architecture.  I was quite surprised, therefore, when we arrived in the backpacker district to find the typical narrow streets, dirty roads and crumbly buildings.  It was all very charming in its own way, but surely [...]

    Blog: Itinerant Londoner - 28 July 2009

Even though I’d just read Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’, with its vivid description of the heat of Cartagena in the summer months, nothing could prepare me for quite how intense the humidity would be when I got there. Even just wandering around slowly, taking in all the beautiful colonial buildings, left [...]
