Blog: On The Road to Find Out - 3 February 2012

I was under the impression that Oscar Guardiola-Rivera must be an interesting guy. He has written a book entitled What If Latin America Ruled The World?, regularly attends talks about South American culture in London, and was now appearing at the Hay Festival in Cartagena. In reality, his talk followed the same path as his [...]

  2. Medellin to Cartagena by Bus

Blog: On The Road to Find Out - 3 February 2012

The big talking point on this bus journey was whether I should have gone at all. I was told nothing would be happening on the last night at Discos Fuentes for the Ondatrópica guys, just tidying up, that kind of thing. So I booked an overnight bus to Cartagena. No point wasting 13 hours of [...]

  3. Facades of Cartagena – a photo story

    Blog: Sophie's World - 2 November 2011

The girls and I recently sailed through the Panama Canal and stopped – all too briefly – in the beautiful, beautiful Colombian city of Cartagena. Strolling through the lively old city, I was struck by the vibrant colours of the colonial architecture. Seemed to go well with the sultry heat, too. UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee [...]Facades of Cartagena – a photo story is a post from Sophie's World

  4. Photo of the Day: Castillo de San Felipe Cartagena

    Blog: Two Backpackers - 10 September 2011

During the seventeenth century, the Spanish paid for prominent European military engineers to build the fortresses which are today Cartagena’s most significant identifying features. Engineering works took well over 208 years and ended with some eleven kilometers of walls surrounding the city, including the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas shown below. In 1984, Cartagena’s [...]

  6. San Blas Islands, Part 2 – Paradise From a Boat

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 10 March 2011

Our days in the islands were filled with snorkelling among the many reefs and swimming out to modern shipwrecks. One of those we visited had sunk only three months previously and its owner is now in prison after going slightly round-the-bend and killing a couple of people. My best sighting during the snorkelling was of [...]

  7. San Blas Islands, Part 1 – Tropical Paradise from a Boat

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 8 March 2011

We did a little research into the cost of flights from Cartagena to Panama City and found that last minute flights would cost about US$300 each. This made the option of sailing suddenly seem far more appealing and not that much more expensive. To find a yacht the best option is to go to the [...]

  9. Playa Blanca – A Truly Tropical Caribbean Beach

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 21 February 2011

We had heard rumours of a beautiful, tropical beach just round the corner from Cartagena, and with a little help from our friend, Tash, whom we had met in Bolivia at Inti Wara Yassi, we were able get there in a very creative fashion. The Lonely Planet says that the best way to get to [...]

  10. Colourful Flagrant Caribbean Coast

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 19 February 2011

Due to time constraints we made the sad decision to miss out the middle of Colombia and headed straight for the coast. As a result we found ourselves a cheap flight from Quito to Cartagena. From our overnight bus from Puerto Lopez to Quito we headed to the airport to drop off our bags. Once [...]

    Blog: Tourist 2 townie - 16 February 2011

Monday morning we decided to trade the crowded, brown beaches of Bocagrande for the white sand and sunshine of the Islas del Rosario and Playa Blanca.  It cost 45,000 COP (About $24US per person) to catch an early-morning 'speed' boat ride from the Cartagena Harbor to the beautiful stretch of narrow white-sand beaches and crystal-clear water known as Playa Blanca.

Blog: Lost World Expedition - 24 January 2011

We had been looking forward to our arrival in Cartagena, Colombia for quite some time. Not only because Cartagena would be our first stop in our journeys in South America. Cartagena de Indias, its official name, is an old port city on the coast of the Carribean dating back to 1533. Due to its location [...]

Blog: Honey Service Year - 1 January 2011

A trip around the world certainly does not make it feel smaller; in some ways, it now feels achingly expansive. The towns and regions that we were fortunate to explore during Honey Service Year are tiny, illuminated pinpricks in a vast sea of unknown and unexplored world. And yet, in my mind's eye, I can see silvery threads between these seemingly isolated points. Bridges and paths that glimmer
