Leticia Practical information

Money & costs

Money

Leticia has two banks, both on the corner of Carrera 10 and Calle 7. There are many casas de cambio on Calle 8 between Carrera 11 and the market. They change US dollars, Colombian pesos, Brazilian reais and Peruvian soles. They open around 8am or 9am until 5pm or 6pm weekdays and until around 2pm Saturday. Shop around, as rates vary. Check exchange rates on both sides of the border if these small differences are important to your budget or if you have a lot of money to change. Don't carry pesos any further into Brazil or Peru as it will be difficult to change them. By the same token, don't bring reais to Bogotá. Change all the money of the country you're leaving in Leticia/Tabatinga. Note that businesses in both Tabatinga and Leticia generally accept both reais and Colombian pesos.

Banco de Bogotá (cnr Carrera 10 & Calle 7) Won't touch your traveler's checks or cash dollars, but has an ATM that accepts Visa cards (but not MasterCard).

Banco Ganadero (cnr Carrera 10 & Calle 7) Changes American Express traveler's checks (but not cash) and provides peso advances on Visa (but not on MasterCard), either by teller or the bank's ATM.

Cambios El Opita (592 5134; Carrera 11 No 7-96) Changes traveler's checks.

There are also money-changing facilities in Tabatinga.

Banco do Brasil (Av da Amizade 60) Gives cash advances in reais on Visa.

CNM Câmbio e Turismo (412 3281; Av da Amizade 2017) About 500m from the actual border, it exchanges cash and traveler's checks, and pays in reais or pesos, but the rate may be a bit lower than in Leticia.
