New Hotel
Despite the name, this place goes back almost 100 years and is housed in three attractive European-style buildings. Standard rooms are nothing special, but there are some nice lake-view options and discounts can be excellent (at least 40%).
Crystal Orange Hotel
Uncluttered and modern business hotel with a crisp and natty interior, Warhol prints in the lobby, glass lift and only four floors, but sadly no views of West Lake from the neat rooms.
Dongpo Hotel
Located on a small but busy street adjacent to the lake, this hotel provides spare, spotless rooms. Ask for a room in the back to avoid the noise of tourist traffic.
Grand Hyatt Regency
The huge megacomplex of the Hyatt dominates the eastern lakeshore; in addition to international-standard rooms, the hotel offers five-star luxuries such as a swimming pool, sauna and health club, and wireless connection.
Jiexin Century Hotel
Affiliated with the China Academy of Art next door, this small guesthouse offers sparsely furnished rooms. The location is terrific, but don't expect the facilities (free bottled water, HBO) that come with other hotels in this price range.
Dahua Hotel
This hotel strives to compete with its lake-side neighbours, though lumpy beds and brusque service keep it at a disadvantage. The hotel's claim to fame is that Mao stayed here.

Overseas Chinese Hotel
This hotel was one of the first in Hángzhōu to accept foreigners and is still popular. Rooms are overpriced but in a great location right on the lakefront.
Shangri La Hotel
Surrounded by forest on the north shore of the lake, this hotel enjoys a winning, picturesque location. The hotel has been around for a long time, so view rooms first, as quality varies. Wireless connection, swimming pool and health club.
Mingtown Garden Hostel
Popular hostel attractively located on the west side of the lake. It's clean, well kept and very near the water; traditional styling and friendly staff.
Wanghu Hotel
Good value and in a great location, this hotel has rooms that equal the Sheraton, for much less money. Room choices include the fancily named 'Rivulet Hall', 'Sapphire Hall', or even the 'Olympus Palace'. Price includes breakfast.
