Lonely Planet review for Old Market Sq

Old Market Sq is the focual point of Old Town. Once the haunt of Naxi traders, they've long since made way for tacky souvenir stalls. However, the view up the hill and the surrounding lanes are still extraordinary, just be prepared to share the experience with hundreds if not thousands of other people.

This square is the focal point of life in ancient town of Lijiang. Today the Naxi old people gather there for a chat after visiting the nearby market, do some freestyle Naxi singing or (the women) dance to some Naxi music. It' s bustling with life with lots to see and hear. You can catch many locals bringing their dogs there too. Many interesting wares are for sale including fashion, food, etc. Visit my website to find out more about guided tours here. :-)

if you're in Lijiang, this is what you've come to see

This is the heart of the Lijiang tourist experience. The same old guy leading his horse (buffalo?) through the square at pre-defined intervals, the folk dance that takes place (and is cleaned up thoroughly) each night. But the architecture of the place is still amazing and there are plenty of eats and sleeps tucked away down laneways that still feel like a 'real' China.
