Hi everyone,
I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww

As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.

It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

For starters, Leshan has consistently been…

I have a long layover in Beijing , almost entire day from 5 AM to 8 PM at Beijing, and I plan on visiting Great Wall at Mutianyu and then around downtown ( like Tienanmen Square, forbidden garden). Would love to have someone to have fun for a day. Anyone interested?

I will be in Beijing and Shanghai, with Australian credit/debit cards. I guess ATM's are plentiful. Do they accept foreign cards (4 digit pins)?
Is Australian cash readily exchanged, or Is US$ more acceptable?

I want to take the super fast train from Beijing to Shanghai. Is booking in advance necessary?

This is forward planning - I'm looking at next June.

Thanks.

Hello! My family (husband and 16 month old daughter) are moving to Shenyang from the US to teach in a small school there in August. We're super excited but we have lots of questions! 1. We want to take our 2 cats with us. Does anyone have experience flying over with pets as carry on or checked luggage? What is the quarantine like? Is there a home quarantine option? 2. Who would you recommend we us for cell service? 3. Does an iPhone or an Android work best? Currently we have pretty high end…

I wonder whether arrival to Xiamen (main railway station) at 2.15 p.m. will still give me enough time to continue to Kinmen and find accomodation there on arrival?
How long can it take to between arrival to Xiamen train station and reaching Kinmen? Is there a direct bus between Xiamen train station and the ferry to Kinmen?
Will the tourist information office in Shuitou, Kinmen, be still open? I plan to rely on the tourist information for finding budget homestay-style accomodation on arrival in…

As we arrive in most towns and cities we will have maps in English to help us get around the sites in each destination.
Could someone please let us know if most or all of the street names in the following cities are in English as well as Chinese,if they are only in Chinese we may have problems.

From Xining I thought to go by public transport till Huashijia, from where I would like to head south till Rangtang. Does anybody know, wether there are public buses on this route? From Rangtang there should be a bus to Ma'erkang, at least I was told…

Hi
I am planning on travelling around China next year for around 6-8 weeks (can be extended if needed) around March/April time.
I will be starting off in Shanghai and will be wanting to end my travel by heading into Vietnam.
I have had a look at various travel routes etc. but wanted to see if anyone had any first hand tips of what to see and what not to miss or know any good websites/blogs that have info.
I would also appreciate tips on travel, whether it is feasible to do it all via train/bus etc…
