I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww…
As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.
It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

Hi again guys,
after Yangshou, we were considering to skip Lonji in favor of more remote villages.
I've received an offer for 3 days tour( from sanjiang) around Yangxi and Gaoting.
Does anyone know these place?
we are getting to Yangshou.
I've checked some price and it seems quite expensive:
Gadoline Motorcycle :120 Yuan
Yulong river bamboo: 320
Li river boat trip: 430
Does anyone know if these price are correct?
We would need a guide to do this? or just rent a motorcycle (as we have always done in Asia)?
I am going to Yunnan this July and would like to ask you for your opinion on the itinerary chosen and the split of time available.
Day 1: Arrival in Dali by plane in the early afternoon
Day 2: Dali (Three Pagodas and Zhonghe Temple & hiking a bit along the face of the mountains)
Day 3: Train to Lijiang and afternoon in Lijiang
Day 4: Lijiang Old Town and maybe a monastery in the surroundings (bike?)
Day 5: Lijiang - Tiger Leaping gorge (short hike, need to restrict to part of gorge to keep time)
I was wondering if you can help. Tomorrow I am going to Hua Shan for the day and have a couple of questions regarding hiking to the north peak.
I have read there are two ways up:
- Jade fountain temple to North peak - I've heard can take between 3/5 hours depending on fitness, this seems to be the most popular option.
- Soldiers path - 2 hour hike up more vertical stairs. I am struggling to find any info on this?? I really fancy this option, however I just want to make sure I am not crazy in…
We are going to Shanghai Beijing and Xi'an and a few nearby cities for about 2 weeks leaving next week. I know the weather will be very hot so I am packing shorts and short skirts and t-shirts and tanks, a few sundresses. I understand that it is ok to dress like this in general in hot weather... but what about temples? I know I need to keep shoulders and thighs/knees covered... can I just throw a shawl over my shoulders and maybe throw on some leggings under a skirt? I guess I could…

Do not let anyone on the first floor you are going to eat. We were swarmed by no less than 15 people trying to get us to go to their…
