I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww…
As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.
It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.
For starters, Leshan has consistently been…
Hello, I am considering going travelling to China in December/January. I am not 100% comfortable around dogs and I would be grateful for any experience on whether it is frequent to encounter dogs in China:
(1) I've read that there may be stray dogs in cities as well as rural places; and
(2) I've read that in cities people do not keep their dogs on leashes.
I'd be grateful if anyone could share their experience.
In particular, I would like to go to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, the Great Wall…
Just did this solo so I thought id pass info on. After having a friend make numerous phone call to various public safety bureaus I gave up trying to get a permit to visit Ejina and surrounding areas. Turned out I was never stopped or asked for one so I assume they are not cuŕrently needed. I stayed at the No Way North Hostel in Yichuan for about $10 per night. Clean; incredibly friendly and helpful staff. They even drove me to the bus terminal and made sure I got on the right bus. The offer…
Heading to Chengdu and surroundings with my younger siblings and my mum in early December. Wondering how long to stay there for and if we can get around Chengdu without a guide (is public transport safe and accessible). We are hoping to do and wondering if it is worth doing: Mount Emei and the Golden Summit, see the pandas at Wolong or Dujiangyan Panda base or the Chengdu research base, Leshan and the Giant Buddha, Jiuzhai Valley (might be too far away and is it worth it?). We are open to…

I am planning to do a 2-4 day hike in the Leaping Tiger Gorge of Yunan Province. The starting point is Lijiang and the end point is Quiatou, where we will catch a bus back to Lijiang. You can read about this hike in both editions of Lonely Planet China. Suffice to say it is a spectacular, scenic gorge with a very friendly infrastructure of guest house that provide food, accommodation, and information along the way. For this hike you travel light, carrying only clothing, snacks and water…
This winter holiday my girlfriend and I are planning a four-day trip to Yunnan Province. She told me the most popular places to travel in Yunnan are Dali, Kunming, and Lijiang. Since it's our first time traveling to this province are there any suggestions to which place would be better? Any suggestions would be amazing. Thanks!
PS: I also realize a plane ticket to Dali is very expensive compared to flying into Kunming are there transportation services that can take you to Dali for a cheap…
I'm searching for any information about the yellow mountains.
We are going to fly to Hangzhou and would like to visit the mountains, 2 days 1 night, in december!
Can we do it by ourselves? Or is it impossible?
Any suggestions, about routes, hotels, anything?
Thanks a lot!
