The Friendship Highway hotels and hostels
Tenzin Hotel;Tianxin Luguan
Popular with both backpackers and Land Cruiser groups though a little noisy for our tastes, especially on the lower floors. The shared bathrooms are excellent and have 24-hour hot water.
Gang Gyan Shigatse Orchard Hotel
Right next to the traditional-carpet factory and just 100m from Tashilhunpo Monastery, the location here can't be beat. Rooms are large and comfortably furnished.
Shigatse Hotel
Recently remodelled and sporting a very fancy looking Tibetan-style lobby and atrium, the Shigatse is often booked solid by the more affluent tour groups.
Samdruptse Hotel
This bright, quiet, modern hotel features courteous staff and rooms with wood floors and decent cotton bedding. The cheaper doubles and triples can sometimes be paid per bed.
Post Hotel
All rooms are twins in this modern, well-managed place across from the Shigatse Hotel. You wouldn't expect it looking at the glossy surfaced lobby, but a few rooms are a bit tattered so check carefully before you pay.
Shambhala Hotel
With its clean rooms, 24-hour hot water and courteous staff, this is one of the best budget choices in town. Showers are available for around Y5 for rooms without bathrooms.
Jiànzàng Hotel
Long a popular place with 4WD groups, the smallish but modern rooms come with bathroom and 24-hour hot water. Prices start high but are open to negotiation. The 2nd-floor restaurant is a decent option for breakfast or a cup of tea.
Qomolongma Friendship Hotel
Cheap doubles run by apathetic staff who seem eager to return to the front desk to watch TV. It's fine if you are on a budget but really need your own bathroom.
Minghu Hotel
A clean and quiet two-star Chinese-style hotel with comfy beds and 24-hour hot water. Most travellers probably won't find the jump in quality over cheaper courtyard places so great to justify the extra expense, however.
Family Guesthouse
The carpets are old and stained but otherwise the rooms and shared bathrooms (no showers) are clean and fine for a night's stay. The guesthouse is on the corner of Yingxiong Nanlu and Weiguo Lu, on the 2nd floor.
Zongri Tibetan Hotel
With 24-hour hot water, clean Western-style rooms and usual discounted rates, this is a solid-value midrange option. A top-floor restaurant offers almost 360 degree views of Gyantse.
Gyantse County Chugu Hotel
The newest courtyard hotel in Gyantse, with 24-hour hot water, wood floor rooms and friendly staff.
Wutse Hotel
This popular place was undergoing renovations at the time of research but is worth a look.
Sherpa Hotel
The pink-painted rooms are clean (if a little small) at this friendly hotel and hot water is available most of the time. The two bars at street level can be noisy but the back rooms remain fairly quiet.
Tenzin Hotel
This place has long been popular with both 4WD tours and budget travellers. It's a bit noisy on the lower floors but the clean rooms, old-town location and views from the roof more than make up for this.
Sakya Lowa Family Hotel
The Lowa is a family-run guesthouse with basic but clean rooms. Walls are brightly painted and accented with traditional motifs, but there are no showers. It's east of the Manasarovar Sakya Hotel.
Manasarovar Sakya Hotel
There is a mix of rooms in this rambling hotel; the ones that overlook the road are probably best. The thick walls keep the place cold and dark but rooms are comfortable enough and some have en suite hot showers.
Zōngshǎn Hotel
With 24-hour hot water, clean Western-style rooms and discounted rates of Y140 to Y160 a room, this is a solid-value midrange option. A top-floor restaurant (dishes Y15 to Y40) offers almost 360-degree views of Gyantse.
Zhāngmù Bīnguǎn
The modern rooms in this government-run hotel are luxurious by Tibetan standards, and the back rooms have great mountain views, but it's overpriced and the management is a bit snooty.
