Hi everyone,
I'm Lonely Planet's destination editor for China. The previous post on this topic had gotten very long and was started several years ago. A lot has changed about the Chinese visa situation, so I thought it might be useful to provide a summary of the current situation as we and our writers understand it. For the full run-down on everything you need to know about visas and entry requirements for China, including prices and detailed processing times, check out the China page: http://ww

As obtaining a Chinese tourist visa appears to have gotten much easier, that long sticky thread has now been released to float. OTOH there appear to be increased concerns and lots of issues related to obtaining a tourist visa extension.

It is my intention to search through and try to collect some posted information here in this thread but would appreciate others offering first hand information and questions here rather than starting multiple threads.

For starters, Leshan has consistently been…

Hello LP!

I will be traveling to the Guillin-Yangshuo area next month, before heading to Hanoi and would like to get some advice about how best to plan my 5 days in the area....Below is my itinerary, but would like any kind of recommendations.

-Fly into Guillin, travel to Yangshuo for 3 days.
-Return to Guillin, day trip or overnight to Longji
-Return to Guillin, take G-train to Nanning and take bus or train to Hanoi

Does it make more sense for me to visit Longji before Yangshuo?

Thank you,

Hi everyone,

This summer I will be travelling with a friend to China in august/ end of july. We are thinking about going to Beijing - Pingyao - Xi'an. But we are not sure how to proceed afterwards. We would like to avoid to hot weather and enormous crowds (as far as this is possible). What would you recommend for a 3 weeks first time traveller in august?

Thank you in advance!

Some additional information. We are both young and physically active. We enjoy beautiful landscapes and hiking, but…

Hi everyone!

I'm heading to China in June-July this year. We fly into Shanghai where will spend a few days before she embarks on a study tour for 16 days concluding in Beijing. I will be on my own for the duration of her study tour, and would like some suggestions on where to visit during this time. I have been to China once before back in 2012, where I did a China 'highlights' of sorts holiday, visiting Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu and HK. Pretty keen to see some new places and not spend…

Hi all,

I would greatly appreciate some feedback on my ~3.5 week Western Sichuan and Yunnan itinerary below. Thanks!

March 29th -- Arrive Chengdu
March 30th/31st/April 1st -- Chengdu
April 2nd -- Bus to Kangding
April 3rd/4th/5th -- Kangding (I'm VERY sensitive to altitude, so there is a day or two built in here to recover/acclimate, plus do a longer day hike from Kangding).
April 6th -- Minibus to Tagong
April 7th -- Tagong
April 8th -- Travel to Rilong
-----Is it possible to travel from Tagong to…

I'm Australian & flying to Shanghai for 3 nights next month on the way to Japan so I'll just sneak in under 72 hours but I'm wondering how long it takes to get the visa at the airport & if there's a lot of hassle? Has anyone been through it & got any tips?

so me and my friend are going for a bout a month in china and at some point plan on hiking the trek.
i have a few questions:
1) is it doable with our big packs?(probably around 70lt packs)
2) do we need any equipment other then... hiking shoes?
3) we might want to take it easy so are there any places to sleep other than tina's halfway house (so we can split it to 3 days)? do we need to make prior reservation there or at other places?
4) how is the weather around 24th~26th of may?
5) do you have any…
