Lonely Planet review for Makye Amye
The past is tastier than the present at this watering hole overlooking the Barkhor. If the stories are to be believed, this was once a drinking haunt of the licentious sixth Dalai Lama, who met the famed Tibetan beauty Makye Amye here and composed a famous poem about her. Tour groups and Chinese tourists are drawn to the views of the Barkhor from the window tables and fine rooftop terrace but the food is just so-so.

Unusual fun modernity in Lhasa
otteradrift recommends this,
We liked this place. After a week traversing Tibet it was relaxing to find somewhere that seemed to have reached the 21st century, and yet still had a lot of character and served up good refinements of Tibetan cuisine. The menu is almost bewilderingly large, the staff were young and friendly, and the busy buzz of the place felt good.
Don't get me wrong: I love eating local food in local places, but that's not what you do on a trip across Tibet - you just eat barely adequate food in tourist restaurants that can at best be described as having 'backpacker charm'.
